Neighbors: No problems before death in Ryan

RYAN -- Local businessman Terry Sauser, who was shot to death in his home Sunday night, was "a good guy, a quiet man who would never get physical," according to his daughter, Michelle Sauser of Cedar Rapids.

Michelle Sauser said the woman charged with murdering her dad, his second wife, Revette A. Sauser, 42, came into his life about six years ago, precipitating his divorce from her mother, Bonnie Sauser of Ryan.

Revette A. Sauser, 42, charged with first-degree murder in the shooting, also

maneuvered to keep Terry Sauser, 59. away from his three children, Michelle Sauser said.

"The whole town is in shock," said Pearl Kelchen, who lives across the alley from the Sauser home, where the owner of the town's only convenience store, was shot to death around 8:30 p.m.

Court documents filed Monday said Revette Sauser fired "one shot from a .380 handgun" into her husband's chest.

While neighbors said they knew of no friction in the marriage, Revette Sauser's recent Facebook postings suggest otherwise.

In a posting following the recent death of her father, Revette Sauser alluded to "fighting" among family and spoke of moving back to Illinois.

Delaware County Sheriff John LeClere said deputies found Terry Sauser unconscious but alive in the living room of the home in the 400 block of South Street. He died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital.

Pearl Kelchen's husband, Harold Kelchen, who had known Terry Sauser for 20 years, said he was “a decent kind of guy." Revette Sauser, he said, had upbraided him with little provocation on several occasions.

Ryan Fire Chief Shawn Kehrli declined to comment on the shooting because both Terry and Revette Sauser had been members of the local Fire Department. :It affects us both ways," he said.

Ann Kehrli, the Sauser's neighbor to the east, described them as good neighbors, pleasant and polite, but not outgoing.

"I have never been inside their house." she said.

Neither Kehrli nor the Kelchens heard or saw anything out of the ordinary until emergency vehicles arrived with flashing lights after 8:30 p.m.

Terry Sauser, the owner of the 5 Alarm Store, a convenience store on Highway 13, was well-known in the community, LeClere said.

LeClere said he was not aware of any calls to the Sauser residence related to domestic issues.

Revette Sauser's bond was set Monday at $1 million cash, and her next court appearance is set for Monday.

Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church in Ryan.

Ryan, population 362, is 36 miles northeast of Cedar Rapids.

The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Wednesday, 06 APR 2011; Page 7; (Newspapers.com):

Suspect bought murder weapon earlier this year

The .380 handgun used to kill Ryan businessman Terry Sauser on Sunday night was purchased earlier this year by the woman charged with first-degree murder in the slaying - his wife, Revette Sauser.

Revette Sauser, 42, obtained a permit to acquire weapons through the Delaware County Sheriff's Office around the middle of last year, according to Sheriff John LeClere.

"My understanding is that she used the permit to buy the .380 handgun sometime after the first of the year.," LeClere said.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Sheriff's Office are trying to determine if she bought the gun with any specific intent in mind, he said.

LeClere said he did not know if Revette Sauser owns any other firearms.

Revette Sauser, who is in the Delaware County Jail on a $1 million cash bond, did not have a permit to carry weapons in a concealed manner, and none would have been required to keep a weapon in the home, he said.

LeClere said deputies found Terry Sauser unconscious but alive in the living room of the home in the 400 block of South Street. He died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital.

Court documents filed Monday said Revette Sauser fired "one shot from a ,380 handgun" into her husband's chest.

Although some firearm experts rate the .380 marginal for accuracy and stopping power, sales of the lightweight and compact handgun have increased dramatically in an era of heightened concern about personal security.
