Chinowth Funeral
GREENFIELD -- Funeral Services for John Chinowth were held at the Baptist Church Monday afternoon, the Rev. Henry Spencer of Murrayville officiating. Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Greer, accompanied by Mrs. C. O. Fessler, sang. Pallbearers were Ray Stickel, Jesse Alberts, Frank Piper, Guy Cooper, Harrold Garrison, Luther Cummins and Ebert Ferguson. Mrs. Alberts, Mrs. Wilbur Cannedy, Mrs. Roy Cannedy and Miss Doris Cannedy cared for the flowers. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Blanche E. Hayes, 83, of 1400 E. Richwoods, died yesterday at Methodist Hospital.
A Peoria resident more than 50 years, she was born near Greenfield Feb. 4, 1889, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Ryan Chinowth. She married Walter B. Hayes in Jacksonville Oct. 27, 1907. He died in Peoria on April 5, 1964.
Surviving are one son, Budy Hayes of Peoria; four daughters, Mrs. Lloyd K. (Cecil) Ingram of Peoria Heights, Mrs. Robert (Marcine) Behrens and Mrs. William (Ileen) Smothers, both of Peoria, and Mrs. Melvin (Thelma) Ackerman of Morton.
One son was killed in World War II.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Note: The son "killed" in World War II was Carroll E. Hayes. He was home on leave and found dead on the railroad tracks.

Chinowth Rites At Greenfield
GREENFIELD, April 13 -- Funeral services for Harry Chinowth of Jacksonville, former manager of the local telephone exchange, were conducted by the Rev. Hulen of Jacksonville Saturday at the Shields funeral home, following services in Jacksonville.
Frank Greer and Mrs. Ray Stickel sang, accompanied by Mrs. James Martin. A group of men, representing the Illinois Telephone Co. of Jacksonville served as pallbearers. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Chinowth, 58, was born in Greenfield, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Chinowth. His first wife died in 1932 and he later was married to Miss Lena Prather of this vicinity, who died last November.
He is survived by two sons, Winfield of Miami, Fla., and Willard, Centralia, a brother, Leland Chinowth, Carrollton, two sisters, Miss Ursaline Chinowth, St. Louis, and Mrs. Walter Hayes, Peoria.
He was buried in April 1948 in Oakwood Cemetery, Greenfield, Greene Co., IL, Findagrave #44148383.

Chinowth
Leland Edmind Chinowth, 72, a 17-year resident of 720 School St., Carrollton, died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday at the John Cochran Veteran's Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 30, 1897 in Greenfield, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Chinowth and spent most of his life in Carrollton. He married the former Bernice Carter May 8, 1922. A retired grocer, Chinowth was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion Post No. 114 and was a Master Mason in Lodge No. 50. He was a member of the WW I medical corps.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Robert of Bethalto and Richard of Greenfield; two sisters, Mrs. W. P. Hayes of Peoria and Mrs. Richard Taylor, St. Louis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Three brothers preceded him in death.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. at Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. J. R. Heike of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Masonic rites will be held at 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery.

Walter B. "Bill" Hayes, 83, of 814 W. 2nd Ave., died Sunday in Martin's Covalescent Home, Bartonville.
A resident of Peoria more than 40 years, he was employed at Peoria Heights Plumbing Co., and then worked at Hiram Walker Distillery.
Mr. Hayes was born in Jacksonville, Feb. 24, 1881, a son of Barnett and Fannie Hayes. He married Blanche E. Chinoweth in Springfield, Oct. 27, 1907, and she survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Ingram, Peoria Heights, Mrs. Robert Behrens and Mrs. William Smothers, both of Peoria, and Mrs. Melvin Ackerman of Morton; a son, Budy Hayes of Peoria; and a sister, Mrs. Jackson Ramey, Springfield. A son, a brother and a sister died earlier.

Mrs. Lena Chinowth Dies Thursday At Hospital Here
Mrs. Lena Chinowth of 962 East College avenue died Thursday at 12:40 p.m. at Our Savior's hospital following an illness of several months.
Mrs. Chinowth, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Ferguson Prather, was born in Greenfield on Sept. 27, 1888. Her marriage to Harry Chinowth took place in this city in 1934.
Surviving are her husband and her mother, one sister, Miss Elsie Prather of Greenfield, a brother, Ora Prather of Elsah, Ill., two step-sons, Willard Chinowth of Centralia and Winfield Chinowth of Miami, Fla., and two grandchildren.
One sister preceded her in death.
Mrs. Chinowth was a member of Central Christian church and of Rebekah lodge, No. 13.
The body is at the Williamson Funeral home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home here and from there the body will be taken to Greenfield where services will be held at Shields Funeral home at 3 p.m. The Rev. Roy S. Hulan will officiate at both services. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

Cpl. U.S. Army, WW2 -- Cpl. Hayes was found dead on the Railroad tracks in Peoria Heights, Ill. on 5-13-1944. He was home on leave from Camp Campbell, Kentucky while being assigned to the 48th Tank Battalion.
He is the son of Mr. Walter B. & Mrs. Blanche {Chinoweth} Hayes of 710 7th Street in Peoria, Illinois. He was visiting his sister, Mrs. L. K. Kingman in the Heights. Cpl. Hayes was employed at the Hyster Co. of Peoria before his enlistment. He leaves one brother, Bud Hayes, and four sisters, Miss Eileen, Miss Thelman, Mrs. Marona Behrens, and Mrs. L.K. Kingman.
Awards: Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal.

Thelma J. Ackerman, 90, of Morton, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Saturday, July 4, 2015, at the family farm.
She was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Peoria to Walter B. and Blanche Chinowth Hayes. She married Melvin Ackerman Feb. 3, 1951, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2005.
She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Peter, in 2002; two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are her children, Kathy (Erie Jones) Ackerman of Seattle, Wash., Margie (Terry) Mottelson of Aurora, Ind., Stan (Catherine) Ackerman of Houston, Texas, Eric (Gayle) Ackerman of Morton, Chris (LeAnn) Ackerman of Seattle, Wash., Jim (Susie) Ackerman of Morton and Quentin (Julie) Ackerman of Tremont; 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Thelma and her husband, Mel, took over the family farm in 1951. They developed a herd of registered Brown Swiss cows which won numerous production awards and were featured on the cover of Hoard's Dairyman.
She was an active leader in 4-H clubs in Morton. Thelma was also involved in the Morton VFW Post 5921 Ladies Auxiliary.
Thelma was very devoted to her children and grandchildren, traveling the country and world to visit them.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, with the Rev. Dwight Winnett officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to service on Friday, both at the funeral home.
Cremation will be accorded following services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Morton VFW Post 5921 Ladies Auxiliary.

Woman found dead in car
A 58-year-old woman apparently died of carbon monoxide poisoning Monday in the garage of her home at 4516 Nelson.
Ileen Smothers was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. at Methodist Medical Center. Her husband, Richard, summoned police to the home about 5:20 p.m.
Police found the woman in the front seat of a car in the garage. A piece of vacuum cleaner hose was found attached to the exhaust pipe and leading to the left front of the car, police said.
The victim's husband told police he turned the car's engine off after finding his wife unconscious. Police said they found no sign of life when they arrived.

Mrs. Ileen Smothers, 58, a resident of 4516 N. Nelson Drive for the past 12 years and of Peoria all her life, died at 8:18 p.m. Monday at Methodist Medical Center.
She was found in her car in the garage at her home, and was apparently the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Born March 7, 1928, in Peoria to Walter B. and Blanche Chiniworth Hayes, she married William E. Smothers Feb. 10, 1950, in Peoria.
Surviving are her husband, two sons, one daughter, one brother, two sisters and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Wilton Mortuary, the Rev. James M. Sandy officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the local mental health unit.
