BERTHA SMITH DEAD

Widow of Joseph Smith Passes Away This Forenoon.

Mrs. Bertha Smith, widow of the late Joseph Smith of Orange township, died this forenoon of a complication of diseases at the home in Orange. A couple of days ago the young woman gave birth to a little girl, which is living and bids fair to survive and become a healthy infant. The death is rendered all the more sorrowful because of the death of the father only a short time ago, about seven weeks.

Decedent was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clate D. Flickinger of Orange township. She was a very amiable young woman and affectionate to parents. She was a student for several years at the Waterloo college, and has a wide acquaintance over the county. She was a devoted Christian and a member of the Progressive Brethren church. Besides the parents, a sister, Miss Pearl, is left to mourn her untimely death.

The funeral services will be held at the home of the decedent's parents on Sunday afternoon.

CLOSING OF A YOUNG LIFE

Joseph H. Smith Dies at Hospital This Morning

Disease Puzzled the Skill of Physicians to Diagnose.

A Post Mortem Examination Was Held Today.

Joseph H. Smith passed away at Emergency hospital at about 8:30 this morning of peritonitis after an illness of nearly three weeks. His case was a very peculiar one, which taxed the skill of the best physicians of the city. The first symptoms were those of appendiciitis and when taken to the hospital it was believed that an operation would be necessary, but it later developed that even the operation would not save the young man's life.

Decedent is a young man well known throughout the city and county, having been born in Eagle Township in August, 1876. He has since resided in Lincoln and Orange townships, and it is in Lincoln that he is best known by reason of his long residence there and association with the people of that vicinity. He was a young man of much promise and his death at this time is a severe blow to his relatives and many friends. He was for the past hear and a half a resident of Waterloo, coming here to accept a position with the Cedar Valley Telephone company, and later becoming a stockholder in the Self-Feeding Pump company, having for some time held the position of shipping clerk with the latter company.

Decedent leaves father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Eli J. Smith; sister, Miss Cloe Smith; three brothers, Oliver, Lloyd and Elmer, of which decedent was the eldest. All the children are at home and with the elder gentleman look after the interests of the farm, which is located in Orange township, opposite the county farm and adjacent to Hammond avenue as it is now extended. He also leaves a loving young wife, who was formerly Miss Bertha Flickinger, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Flickinger. They were married about four years ago. Mrs. Smith is almost overcome with grief at the loss of her husband, and being in a very delicate condition it makes the blow all the harder to bear.

The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the parental home opposite the county farm and adjacent to Hammond avenue, conducted by Rev. J. A. Earl. Interment will be in the Hudson cemetery. Decedent was a consistent member of the First Baptist church, joining at Hudson several years ago.

ENTIRE FAMILY GONE

Little Child, the Only Surviver, Dies Last Night.

The little two-weeks-old daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith passed away at the D. D. Flickinger home in Orange township last night. This closes one generation of the Smiths in a particularly sad manner, such as is rarely recorded in the length of time between the death of the father, mother and child.

The father, Joseph Smith, died just nine weeks ago; the mother two weeks ago, and now the little child is called to their side in the great beyond. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Flickinger home, conducted by Rev. E. L. Hildbrand, and interment will be made in Orange township cemetery along side the remains of its parents.
