"Accident Takes Life of Charles Leary, 76."
Charles E. Leary, 76, a long time Jesup area resident, died at People's Hospital Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m., three hours after he had been injured in a pedestrian-truck accident at an intersection at Independence. Eugene L. Spece, 35, of Independence, was driver of the truck. According to a statement given to police, he was driving east on the main street toward the Second Ave. stop light. Another vehicle had stopped for the light in an outside lane. Spece, traveling in the center lane had stopped one or two lengths west of the intersection. According to Spece, when the light changed, Leary walked or ran in front of the vehicle in the outside lane and into the side of his one and half ton truck at about 2:50 p.m. Mr. Leary died of a skull fracture. He was born July 14, 1887, at Lacon, Ill., the son of John and Mary Wills Leary. He was united in marriage with Miss Beulah Trumbauer at Dunkerton March 20, 1907. They farmed in the Jesup area from 1907 to 1947 when they moved to their farm near Dunkerton. He had been a resident of Independence about two months. Surviving are his wife, Beulah, and five children, Lloyd of Freeport, IL; Robert and Mrs. Harry Baldwin of Jesup; Raymond of Walker, and Mrs. L.J. Forney, of Seville, Ohio. Also surviving are three brothers, Ora, of Manchester; Owen and Harry of Walker; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, George, and a grandson, Charles Baldwin. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Parker Funeral home with the Rev. Wayne Carlson, pastor of the Methodist church at Independence, officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Crest Cemetery. The casket bearers will be Melvin Anderson, W.D. Patten, Albert Strauel, Bert Phillips, Harry Short and Elmer Fuller.

Dr. Atherton Dies
Dr. Ira Kemp Atherton, 59, director of hog cholera prevention work in Maryland for fourteen years, died suddently at his home at Hyattsville, Tuesday. Dr. Atherton, who attended a banquet of the Chamber of Commerce of Hyattsville, went downstairs after some peppermint, and when he failed to return in a reasonable time, Mrs. Atherton investigated and found him on steps. For the last several months Dr. Atherton had been suffering with high blood pressure. Dr. Atherton was born in Bloomington, Ill. He came to his Maryland position from Iowa. Surviving Dr. Atherton is his widow and a son.

BETTY JAYNE GREENFIELD
Betty Jayne (Atherton) Greenfield of Vineland passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013.
Betty Jayne was born May 10, 1923, in Washington, D.C. to Harry A. and Mildred B. Atherton. She was raised in Washington and Silver Springs, Md. She shared her father's love of boating on the Chesapeake Bay.
Betty Jayne enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and the theater. As a girl scout in Washington, D.C., she helped plant a tree on the White House lawn with first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Betty Jayne attended the University of Maryland and pledged to Kappa Kappa Gamma. In the late 1940s, Betty Jayne worked at the Pentagon for Najeeb Halaby, aide to Secretary of Defense James Forrestal. While there, she was named employee of the month.
She married Vincent Joseph Greenfield on Sept. 17, 1949, in Washington at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. They lived in Silver Springs, Md., before moving to Vineland in 1956. She was an avid volunteer at Sacred Heart Grammar School, where her children attended. With her constant presence at the school, Betty Jayne became the school's secratary for more than 25 years until her retirement at age 79 in 2003. In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by son, V. Michael Greenfield; son and daughter in-law, Gary and Kathleen Greenfield; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Claire Greenfield all of Vineland; son, Robert Greenfield of Robbinsville; son and daughter-in-law, David and Terry Greenfield of Deptford; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Alex Balentine of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter and fiance, Julia Raphaely and David Centafont of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; grandchildren, Michael Paul Greenfield, Renee Greenfield, Bryan Greenfield, Meredith Greenfield; grandson and wife, Richard and Mary Greenfield; granddaughter and husband, Lauren and Ron Withelder; grandson and wife, Kevin and Victoira Greenfield; grandson and fiancee, Christopher Greenfield and Meghan Moratelli; grandchildren, Morgan, Caitlynn, David, Joseph, Michael and Christine Greenfield, Julia and Chandler Balentine and Elizabeth and Kate Raphaely; great-grandchildren, Ray and Olivia Withelder; sister, Harriet "Buckie" Atherton Haynes. She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent J. Greenfield; parents, Harry A. and Mildred B. Atherton; and brother, Harry M. Atherton.
A church visitation will be held today from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a memorial Mass at 11:30 a.m. from Christ The Good Shepherd Parish - Church of Sacred Heart, 1010 E. Landis Ave., Vineland. Final disposition will be private at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Rone Funeral Service, 1110 E. Chestnut Ave., Vineland.
Donations in Betty Jayne's memory can be made to Sacred Heart High School, 15 North East Ave., Vineland, NJ 08360.

Vincent J. Greenfield, 57, of 1750 Pats La., died Monday in Newcomb Hospital.
Born in Jenkinstown, Pa., he resided in Vineland 27 years and was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church.
A 1949 graduate of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, he was the owner of Greenfield Associates. He also was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Jane (Atherton) Greenfield; five sons, Vincent Michael and Richard Gary, both of Vineland, and Robert Patrick, Stephen Edward, and David Jeffrey, all of Philadelphia; two daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Greenfield of Alexandria, Va., and Juila Marie Greenfield, at home; his mother, Virginia S. Greenfield of Vineland; two brothers, two sisters, and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church.
Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Grammar School Building Fund, the Newcomb Hospital Building Fund, or the Leukemia Society of America, Ind., Southern New Jersey Capter, 216 Haddon Ave., Westmont, N.J.
