Biography

Benjamin Henton was born on 9 June 1793 in Rockingham Co., VA. He married Rachel Stinson, daughter of Robert Stinson and Elizabeth Harrod, on 17 April 1821 in Washington Court House, Fayette Co., OH. Benjamin Henton died on 28 March 1863 in Peru, Miami Co., IN.

Note: Benjamin Henton, fourth child of Thomas Henton and Sarah Tallman, accompanied his parents from Virginia to Adams County, Ohio in 1804, later to Franklin County and thence to Highland County. In 1817 he went to Fayette County, Ohio where he began practicing medicine. In 1820 he was elected to the Ohio State Legislature from Fayette County and was appointed a delegate to the convention that nominated General Jackson for President in 1824. Dr. Henton served as treasurer of Fayette County for twelve years. In 1829 he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Many of the family have been adherents of that faith, especially among the older branches. Thomas, Benjamin's father, was notably zealous therein. Dr. Henton took his family to Peru, Indiana in 1837 where his medical practice soon spread over Miami and adjoining counties. He was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 1850, to the House of Representatives in 1845, and again to the House in 1853. He served in the War of 1812 in Capt. James Wilson's Company of Ross County, Ohio during September and October of 1812, and in Capt. Hugh Roger's Company in July and August of 1813.

Biography

Benjamin Tallman was born on 8 November 1791 in Rockingham Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Warwick, daughter of William Warwick and Nancy Craig, about 1815 in Pocahontas Co., VA. Benjamin Tallman married Jane Armstrong about 1830. He married Sophronia Norvell in 1862 in Upshur Co., WV. He died in 1871 in Tallmansville, Upshur Co., WV.

Note:

Benjamin Tallman was a young man when the War of 1812 broke out and he enlisted. He was later commissioned Captain and led a company of soldiers, by way of Pennsylvania, down the Winchester Valley to Norfolk, Virginia. They remained there until peace was declared, at which time he was a Colonel of the 127th Regiment.

He did not return home to Harrisonburg, but instead his father's family followed him and they settled in Pocahontas County. There Benjamin married his first wife and they reared a family of five sons and one daughter. After his wife died, he married Jane Armstrong, with whom he had no children. In Pocahontas County he represented the county in the Virginia House of Delegates, and was for many years the ruling elder in the Liberty Presbyterian Church, as well as Justice of the Peace.

He sold out in Pocahontas County and relocated to Upshur County, West Virginia, settling on the farm of his son James who had settled there two years previously. Soon after, his sons Robert and Cyrus came to Upshur County. He and the three sons then jointly bought about 700 acres of land, known as the John C. Jackson tract in Upshur County. Later his other two sons, John and William, also relocated to Upshur County with their families.

In the spring of 1861 his second wife, Jane, died and in the fall of 1862 he married Sophronia Norvell of Sago, West Virginia. The farm recently owned by Key Bennett was originally their home.

On January 5, 1869 a U.S. Post Office was established on his farm and named in his honor, Tallmansville. He was the first Postmaster. Although the little village has now changed the name to Strader, the Post Office remains the same.

In the fall of 1871 he fell dead at the age of 84 and is buried at the Tallmansville Baptist Cemetery. His wife, Sophronia, was appointed to take his place as Postmaster March 27, 1872.

This information was furnished by Cora Amaretta (Tallman) Shipman at age 89, and published in the Greater Tallman Family Newsletter, No. 3, Fall 1985, and also in The Greater Tallman Family News Issue No. 11, Fall 1987, and was contributed to by Mrs. Helen (Lightburn) Boecher a descendant of Benjamin Tallman.

Benjamin Tallman lived in 1850 in Pocahontas Co., VA (now WV.)1
