HIT-RUN DRIVER INJURES MAIDEN
Vanera Shaw, 15, Hurled 50 Feet -- Autoist Not on Highway, Report.
COMPANION NOT HURT
License Number of Machine Obtained -- Man Fled, but Three Hours Later Reports
Struck by a hit-and-run driver at Crestline and Rich about 8:30 last evening, Miss Vanera Shaw, 15, E1623 Garland avenue, student at Rogers high school, was knocked 50 feet, but fortunately escaped without broken bones.
With a friend, Sylvia Windel, E1719 Empire, she was walking north on Crestline. They were off the paved street and walking in a path alongside as there is no sidewalk there, when suddenly the car rushed up behind them, struck Miss Shaw and whirled Miss Windel, who had her arm about Miss Shaw, completely around by the impact.
"It threw Valera at least 50 feet out into a field," Miss Windel said at the emergency hospital. "I ran and picked her up and the driver of the car, who had stopped, then came back and asked how she was. He spoke with a very thick tongue. Seeing she was not dead, he ran and got into his car and started to drive off, leaving a girl who was with him standing in the road. She had to run after him to get him to stop for her."
Miss Shaw suffered severe abrasions of the head, hands, feet and one thigh. An hour later Arthur Westbrook, 35, telephoned to the police station to report the accident. At 11:20 he appeared, explaining he had ascertained the girl was not badly injured and wanted to take a young woman companion home before he reported. He was booked, but not held by the police, who said he had not been drinking.
The number of his car had been obtained by the police.
