Shirley Ann Custer, 78 of Barton passed away on November 24, 2020 at UPMC Western Maryland due to complications from Covid-19.
Born August 5, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Violet and Fred Rounds. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, Charles and Ollie Custer; and her brother, Dale Rounds.
Shirley was a 1960 graduate of Valley High School. Shirley was a member of the Barton United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Barton American Legion #189 Auxiliary, where she held the title of President for many years and held other various offices within the organization. She worked and retired from the Allegany County Board of Education. At one time Shirley was a phlebotomist and worked at J & M Restaurant, located in Barton.
Shirley was an avid sports fan. She really enjoyed watching all sports but she was especially fond of the Baltimore Ravens, the Washington Redskins and NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. Shirley loved college basketball and cheered on several teams.
She loved line dancing, adventures on bus trips, going to casinos and being outdoors while camping. Ocean City Maryland was one of her favorite places, she took a trip there every year. Shirley had many friends and she never met a stranger. She loved her family more than anything and she will be missed by many.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Charles “Bugs” Custer of Barton; her sister, Sandra Wallbaum of Georgia; her sons, Geoffrey Goodrich and wife, Lois of Street, MD and Chad Custer of Hagerstown, MD. Shirley is also survived by her special grandson that she was raising, Lucas Sevy-Custer; her grandchildren, Geoffrey Goodrich, Brittiany Goodrich, Chelsea Goodrich Hall; two great grandsons; sister-in-law, Peachie Rounds; numerous nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Linda Raines and her loving companion, Patches.
Shirley was always a giving person and her giving spirit continued in death. Per her wishes, Shirley’s body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board, and there will be no services.
She was buried in November 2020, Body donated to Medical Science, Maryland Anatomy Board, Findagrave #219071225.

Charles Arnold "Bugs" Custer, 77 years old, of Barton, passed away Dec. 29, 2020, at his home due to a long struggle with cancer.
Born on Aug. 8, 1943, he was the son of the late Charles and Ollie Custer. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley A. Custer; sisters, Katherine Marchinke and Darlene Green.
Charles Custer served three tours in Vietnam as an infantryman in the United States Army, earning awards for his service and Honorably Discharged after his last tour of duty. He also was past commander for several years at Barton American Legion Post 189, a dedicated member of Barton United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge 161.
He worked as a dragline operator at a local coal mine and at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company until it closed, and retired from the Kingsford Charcoal Plant.
Charles Custer was an avid hunter, until his health kept him from enjoying the great outdoors. He would tell the story of an eight-point buck he shot over 300 yards away on a hillside and it rolled down a gully. He would tell how it took him hours to retrieve the buck and the antlers are still hanging in the family home. He was an avid sports fan of the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins. He went to every American Legion Convention in Ocean City, even after his health held him back from doing other things. Family always came first and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Charles is survived by his son, Chad Custer, of Hagerstown; stepson, Geoffrey Goodrich and wife, Lois, of Street; his sisters, Ruth Miller, of Westernport, and Helena Gage, of Yuma, Ariz. Charles is also survived by a special grandson that he was raising, Lucas Sevy-Custer; his grandchildren, Geoffrey Goodrich Jr., Brittiany Goodrich, Chelsea Goodrich-Hall; and two great-grandsons. Among many other relatives, too many to mention.
Charles was always a giving person to all and continued in death. Per his wishes, Charles' body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board.
There will be a memorial service by the American Legion and Masonic Lodge, Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021, starting at 6 p.m. at Barton Post 189. COVID-19 guidelines will be adhered to.

Ollie E. "Mollie" (Tichnell) Custer, 97, formerly of Coal Mine Road, Barton, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center, Lonaconing, where she had been a resident.
Born March 3, 1920 in Barnum, WV, she was the daughter of the late Arnold and Mary (Nelson) Tichnell.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Custer, daughters, Catherine Marchinke and Virginia "Darlene" Green, a grandson, Donald Marchinke, two brothers and two sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Custer was a member of the Barton United Methodist Church. She worked briefly out of the home, but dedicated her life to raising her children and grandchildren. Ollie was a kind loving mother and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
She leaves behind her daughters, Ruth Miller of Barton, Helena Gage and husband Ron of Somerton, AZ, a son, Charles "Bugs" Custer and wife Shirley of Barton, seventy three grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless close friends.
Friends and family will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Thursday, December 28th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at the Boal Chapel on Friday, December 29th at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Sandy Cowan officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

Sallie Ann Danford Philpot, daughter of Dr. Samuel and Ann Eliza Brashear Wilson, was born near Barnesville, Ohio, January 13, 1857, and departed this life December 24, 1945, at the home of her son, Carl C. Danford, of Lewisville, Ohio, Rfd 3. Her age at the time of her death was 88 years, 11 months and 11 days.
At the early age of nine she affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church at Beach Chapel. Later she moved her membership to Union Chapel, then to Swazey church where she was Sunday School superintendent for several years, and finally to the Summerfield Methodist church where she remained a very faithful and active worker in all church activities. Soon after coming to Summerfield she became teacher of a class of high school girls. Later when this class was combined with the Alpha Omega class she was co-teacher with Mrs. Minnie Calland.
She was a charter member of the Julia Dent Grant Tent No. 55, Daughter of Union Veterans. Her father served as a doctor in the Civil War. She was united in marriagte to William McGee Danford on March 29, 1877, who passed away October 23, 1895.
On September 13, 1907 (sic), she married William H. Philpot, who preceded her in death in May, 1932.
She leave to mourn her passing two sons, Carl C. Danford, of Lewisville, Ohio, Route 3, and George C. Philpot, of Summerfield, Ohio. Four grandchildren, Emily Danford King, Summerfield, Ohio, Roger L. Danford, Lewisville, Ohio, Mary Margaret and Lawrence Philpot, Summerfield, Ohio and tow great-grandchildren, Paul and Mary Kathleen King, Summerfield, and one sister, Mrs. Nettie Martin, Whigville, Ohio and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Summerfield Methodist church with Rev. W.E. Peters in charge. The burial was in the Glady Cemetery.
She was buried in December 1945 in Glady Cemetery, Whigville, Noble Co., OH, Findagrave #73494991.
