Chad W. Everett was born on 2 January 1974 in Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., IA. He died on 6 January 1993

Obituary -- The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Friday, 8 JAN 1993, p.8 (Newspapers.com):

The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa); Friday, 08 January 1993; Page 1; (Newspapers.com):

Fond memories of accident victim

Friends and teachers at Kennedy High School fondly recalled 19-year-old Chad Everett Thursday, the day after the 1992 graduate was killed in a train-car accident.

"He was always an enthusiastic, outgoing person with all of the band activities," said David Law, Kennedy band director. He also was involved in theater, swing choir and became the school's first homecoming king last year.

Three other Cedar Rapids young men were also in the car about 10:45 Wednesday night when it slammed into the side of a Chicago and Central Pacific railroad freight train at the Paris Road crossing on Highway 13, about three miles north of Central City.

Everett, of 2119 Linmar Dr. NE, was killed instantly. He was in the front passenger seat.

Brian Weepie, 18, of 2040 Carolina Dr. NE, was driving the car -- owned by Everett's stepbrother, David Ross of Sioux City -- on the return journey from a ski trip to Sundown Mountain in Dubuque. The Linn County Sheriff's Department said he apparently failed to stop for the flashing red signals at the crossing.

He was pulled from the wreckage and airlifted to Mercy Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition last night.

Two back seat passengers, Daniel J. Fitzgerald, 19, of 2107 Evergreen St. NE, and Matthew K. Prediger, 19, 2131 Birchwood Dr. NE, were treated for minor injuries at St. Luke's Hospital and released.

Everett and Weepie were wearing seat belts, the Sheriff's Department said. Information was not available on whether the other two were also wearing seat belts.

Troy Davidson, a friend of the accident victims, was at the crossing Thursday morning. He said he had talked to Fitzgerald and Prediger, who told him they were asleep when the accident happened.

"They are still shook up," Davidson said.

All four young men in the car were 1992 graduates of Kennedy High School.

"(Chad) helped organize a lot of our events like our band carnival and was the disk jockey for our in-house dances," Law said. "He was a nice young man to have around. That sounds really trite, but he was a really good kid."

Everett was a member of the band for four years and also played in the school jazz band. The last two years he was section leader of trombones and was named outstanding senior in the band.

Although Everett had graduated, the pain of his death was being felt Thursday by Kennedy students who knew

him.

"It was a somber mood in the room," said Law after talking to members of the band. "There were a few tears."

Law said a brass ensemble will play at Everett's funeral at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church Saturday.

The accident remains under investigation.

He was buried in January 1993 in Cedar Memorial Park, Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., IA, Findagrave #49799361.
Cause of death:
