Obituary -- (Findagrave.com, unknown newspaper):
Leo Wirtz, Jr. Killed Saturday
Ogden Woman Severely Injured;
File Manslaughter Charges
Leo Wirtz, Jr., 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wirtz of Ogden, was killed Saturday, when he was struck by an auto driven by Elmer Dwayne Lingner, 41, of Jefferson, on new Highway 30 south of Boone around 8:30 p.m.
Mrs. Thomas (Jean) Koenig of Ogden was seriously injured. She was taken to the Boone County Hospital but was immediately transferred to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where she is listed in poor condition. One leg was amputated.
The freak accident occurred in the eastbound lane of the highway just west of the Kate Shelley Drive entrance near Boone.
The car, which had been occupied by young Wirtz and his dad, and Mr. and Mrs. Koenig, apparently stalled.
Mr. Koenig, recuperating from a back ailment, remained in the auto to steer while the other three occupants got out to push it off the road.
Several cars reportedly passed them while they were pushing but a car driven by Elmer Dwayne Lingner, 41, of Jefferson apparently did not see the troubled auto and rammed into it.
Both of young Wirtz' legs were severed and he was dead on arrival at the Boone County Hospital. Mrs. Koenig received severe leg and internal injuries.
Thomas Koenig and the older Wirtz were uninjured in the mishap. Lingner received a cut on on the chin but was treated and released form the Boone hospital.
The cars involved were demolished.
Highway Patrolman Orval Beaman, Richard Stockl and members of the Boone Police department said the Koenig car was pushed over 200 feet down the road by the collision impact.
Patrolman Beaman said Lingner will be charged with manslaughter. He is being held under $10,000 bond.
It is the seventh fatality in Boone County this year.
Leo Wirtz, Jr., son of Leo and Della Deal Wirtz, was born in Boone, Aug. 15, 1957. He had resided in Boone and was a member of the sixth grade at Bryant School until moving to Ogden, three months ago. The family lives east of Ogden in the home formerly occupied by Mert Andrew.
Survivors include his parents, three brothers, David, Billy and Carl, all at home; four sisters, Mrs. Michael (Roberta) Doyle of Boone, Jackie of Boone, Judy Greene of Ogden, and Mrs. Richard (Linda) Godwin of Webster City; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Deal of Kaukauna, Wis.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1970 at 1:30 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Boone with The Rev. Gerald LaMotte, minister at the First United Methodist Church, in charge. Burial was at Boone Memorial Gardens.
NOTE: "Judy Greene of Ogden" is not an individual that I am able to identify with confidence in public records. She was not a biological child of Leo and Della Wirtz -- she was not mentioned in either of their obituaries. Jackie Godwin was Jacqueline Comstock, daughter of Leo Jr.'s aunt Lelia and her second husband, Maurice "Michael" Comstock. Jackie appears to have been raised by Leo Sr. and Della Wirtz. DLB 2021.
