Notes written by Willie Reeves Bivins (via Tracy DeVault):

In 1983 Love was awarded a bronze medallion from the Joslin Diabetic Association and a silver engraved identification tag from Eli Lilly and Company in recognition of her having controlled diabetes with insulin for 56 years. She was 86 years old at the time.  (1983 Xmas letter)  She died 27 Feb 1986, after spending 25 days in the hospital. Among her final problems was gangrene in both feet. She was almost 90. She had a very severe case of diabetes, and her survival for about 60 years was because of her own determination and self care, and also the devoted care of her family. Both Rhoda Frances and May Joe inherited diabetes.

Their daughters continued to live in the family home. They were deeply involved in church, civic and social activities in Abingdon, Virginia. Our mothers were life-long friends, as well as first cousins.    May Joe and Rhoda were wonderful hostesses, and visits to them were special events in our lives. They furnished addresses and much of the data for the descendants of John DeVault Reeves.

She was buried in 1986 in Sinking Spring Cemetery, Abingdon, Washington Co., VA.

Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Charlotte Marie Reeves Crombie of Knoxville, TN died on February 23, 2019. She was 84 years old.

Born on May 25, 1934, Charlotte Marie Reeves grew up in Johnson City, TN, with her father Paul, a decorated WWI Veteran, mother Ann Bell of Cherokee heritage, and sister Jewel, who was seven years older. Her Grandmother was the renowned Rhoda Taylor Reeves, sister of Alfred and Robert Taylor, who each served terms as Governor of Tennessee.

Charlotte graduated from Science Hill High School, an honorable member of the ROTC, in 1952. She attended East Tennessee State University, earning her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education in 1956. She was crowned Beauty Queen one year for the Johnson City Burly Bowl. Charlotte embarked on her teaching career as a Remedial Reading Specialist in Pensacola, FL. There, she met Todd Austin Crombie, a Naval Flight Cadet from Garden City, NY. After he graduated as an Ensign jet aviator, they married in July 1958.

Ensign Crombie’s first Tour of Duty was at San Diego Naval Air Base as a test pilot. Charlotte and Todd had a daughter, Andrea Rene, in 1959, and a son, Tabor Austin, in 1960. They then were stationed in China Lake, CA until 1964. The family transferred to Sanford, FL, and Lieutenant Crombie served two Tours of Duty in Vietnam. After Todd returned as a decorated war veteran prompted to Lt. Commander, Charlotte and Todd had a second daughter, Burnette Nicole, in 1966. Burnette was a gift that ushered in a bright new era of family history.

The next Tour of Duty was at Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Base on the Island of Puerto Rico. Charlotte was active in the Navy Wives Club, serving as Event Coordinator for numerous functions, volunteer in the local community of Fajardo feeding orphaned infants, and participating in Operation Boot Strap poverty relief. She and her family were active at the Navy Chapel, she as Sunday School teacher, and Rene and Tabor in the Chapel Children’s Choir. The family enjoyed visits to San Juan and the US Virgin Islands.

In 1970, the family moved to North Kingstown, RI, where Todd served on board the USS Intrepid at Quonset Point. Charlotte continued as a Navy Wives Club Member, and taught Vacation Bible School at the Navy Chapel, where Tabor and Rene were confirmed, active in the Youth Program, and in the Youth Choir. Charlotte joined Commander Crombie for the Intrepid’s European Tour, visiting Italy, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Denmark and the British Isles. The trip culminated with a visit to the Town of Crombie in Scotland.

When the USS Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974, Charlotte and Todd divorced. Charlotte shifted her focus to being involved in her children’s school activities, helping with the Youth Program at Greenwood Presbyterian Church in West Warwick, RI, and various creative endeavors, including New England Antique restoration. In 1977, Charlotte relocated her family to Knoxville, TN, were she resumed her career as a professional educator, earning a Masters in Early Childhood Development from the University of Tennessee. She taught Preschool for the next 35 years, before finally retiring at age 80 in 2013. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

Charlotte’s Legacy

From her earliest years, Charlotte met life with a gifted intellect and creativity, and a vivacious social charm. She was a true matriarch, instilling strong values in her three children. Each was gifted with talents of their own, and Charlotte took every opportunity to enrich their development, setting them upon their paths to success.

Charlotte’s family held a tradition of musical abilities, which she passed on to her children with great enthusiasm. Her Great Uncles dueled with fiddles on their campaign trails, and her Aunt Love played old time mountain banjo. Rene plays guitar and Appalachian dulcimer. Tabor learned banjo from his Great Aunt Love, and also plays violin and Scottish cantor pipe. Burnette once won a Talent prize for a harmonica performance, and picked up mandolin on her own.

Charlotte had deep appreciation for nature and beauty as portrayed in fine art. Very early in their lives, her children showed talent in drawing and painting. Charlotte encouraged development of this creativity. She educated her children in the works of the Great Masters, particularly after her museum visits in Europe. As a result of their mother’s influence, all of the children found ways to express their creativity artistically. Tabor created murals for his school. Both Rene and Burnette received formal Studio Art training, and are accomplished in their own right. Charlotte proudly displayed their work in her home.

Charlotte was very proud of each of her children’s academic success, and instilled in them a love of lifetime learning. She wanted them all to go as far as they could with their education. This influence by their mother can be seen in the fact all three have remarkable accomplishments in the sciences. Rene earned a PhD from Cornell Medical, with experience in Viral Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center in New York City, and Principal Investigator for the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Tabor pursued Systems Engineering at the US Naval Academy, and a degree in Mathematics at University of Tennessee, with experience in Database Management and Information Science. Burnette holds a degree in Marine Biology from Smith College, with career experience at St Andrews University Marine Institute, Scotland, as well as Laboratory Management at Dartmouth College, NH, University of Maryland, and Genetics and Developmental Biology at University of Tennessee.

Besides being concerned about their intellectual and educational development, Charlotte also worked to develop Godliness and character in her children. They tell of this sweet memory from their childhood, that wonderfully illustrates how Charlotte invested in and shaped their lives. One Easter, Charlotte gave them each a chocolate cross (not bunnies). With each cross she included a notecard with a verse taken from the Beatitudes of Christ’s Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:5-9). For Rene, she included, “Blessed are the meek…” For Tabor, “Blessed are the Peacemakers…” For Burnette, “Blessed are the pure in heart…” This was her way of building them up, and framing their own unique personalities.

Throughout her life, Charlotte’s greatest legacy is as Professional Educator. She is best remembered for her expertise and commitment to nurturing the minds of countless young students. Her career at the West Hills Baptist Church Preschool, and then at the Sequoyah Hills Elementary Education Program in Knoxville, endeared her to the parents of these children, who appreciated Charlotte’s knowledgeable approach and innovative techniques. It was obvious She loved children, and loved touching their lives, helping them grow to their fullest potential. Charlotte’s impact on the emotional, social, and academic well-being of future generations is immeasurable.

Charlotte is remembered for her compassion. She showed kindness by visiting sick neighbors. She was outgoing, bubbly, friendly, and a good listener. She was also very nurturing, and caring. This readily can be seen in the way she took care of Tabor throughout the health challenges he faced after his diagnosis with brain cancer in his Jr Year at the Naval Academy, multiple recurrences, and experimental treatments at Bethesda Naval Hospital and the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC. At present, Tabor remains in remission. Charlotte truly lived a remarkable life, and will be missed by those who knew and loved her.

“But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the Kingdom of God.” Luke18:16 KJV

Charlotte was received into the arms of the mercy of Christ, on February 23, 2019, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville. She is preceded in death by her parents, and sister Jewel Teague. She is survived by daughter Andrea Rene Crombie, 59 of New York City; son Tabor Austin Crombie, 58, and daughter Burnette Nicole Crombie, 52, of Knoxville; niece Jackie Teague Lyons and family, of Abingdon, VA; niece Pam Teague, of San Diego,CA; and other relatives and descendants of the Alfred and Robert Taylor Family, and Rhoda Taylor Reeves Family. She has relatives of the Hale family in Johnson City, TN.

A private Funeral Service was held on March 4, 2019 at the Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel in Knoxville. Chaplain Nancy Twigg of UTMC officiated, with musician Sam Ware, and Funeral Director Keith Richards of Mann Heritage Chapel. Charlotte is buried beside her parents in the “Garden of the Heavenly Rest” at Monte Vista Cemetery in Johnson City, TN.

She was buried in February 2019 in Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City, Washington Co., TN, Findagrave #197760074.
Charlotte Marie Reeves was educated in 1956 in East Tennessee State University, BA degree, Education.

Lompocan Is Honorman of Navy Class

(From THE HOIST, a publication of the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego.)

A unique situation arose in the awarding of honors to top man in the graduating class of the Machinery Repair School, at the U.S. Navy Service School Command, San Diego. Two men completed the course with almost identical grades.

Joseph D. Avila, MRFA, and Haskiel J. Teague, MRFA, were the students in question. Avila completed the course with a final grade of 92.5116, while Teague closed his days at NTC with a 92.5118. With the final grades so close, it was decided that both men should be honor students from their class.

Avila is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony S. Avila of Lompoc. He entered the Navy service on Oct. 3, 1950 at Santa Barbara. Before entering the Machinery Repair School, Avila was stationed on the USS Jason (ARH-1). After graduation, he will return to his ship. Avila wears the Korean medal.

Joe's brother, John Avila, MR3, USN, now stationed in Korea, was honorman of his class in 1949.

Haskiel Teague hails from the other side of the country, Johnson City, Tenn.
