Trooper critical after high-speed chase

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. (AP) – A motorcycle trooper suffered critical head injuries in a high speed chase after a car driven by a 15-year old boy spun out of control in a highway tunnel, the Washington State Patrol said.

State patrol Officer Steven L. Frink, 38, was in pursuit of a speeding car Thursday when the car spun. Frink swerved to avoid the car and was thrown into a pole on top of a concrete barrier on an interstate 90 exit ramp, State patrol Lt. Dick Smith said.

Three Seattle youths, including the 15-year-old driver and two others aged 15 and 16, were questioned and released.

When the driver saw Frink in pursuit, he took the Island Crest Way exit on Mercer Island. The exit has a off-ramp that curves into a tunnel, Smith said.

The 1990 Mercedes Benz lost control, skidded into a wall and stopped in the middle of the road facing the wrong direction.

Frink came out of tunnel at a high rate of speed and drove up on a concrete barrier to avoid striking the car, Smith said. Frink was thrown into a pole while his motorcycle skidded more than 130 feet.

The teens fled in the car, driving about 14 blocks and abandoning the vehicle, Smith said.
