Picasso of the Camera Wins Prize in World Contest
J. Ira Laird Jr. of Camp Hill, handles a motion picture camera with the same authority that Picasso handles a brush.
He is the Cecil B. DeMille of the amateur camera world and his productions have merited kudos from film societies all over the globe.
Laird, who has been wielding a camera since he was knee-high to a film can, has won such coveted awards in the world of the almighty millimeter as first prize in the nature film competition of the Photographic Society of America which scrutinizes film from all over the world.
AND HIS work has been places on the same level with none other than that Shakespeare of the film, Walt Disney:
"(Laird's film) was beautifully photographed. It was a joy to watch, because you were always discovering new realms in nature itself. . .
"It is conventional in a way, because Disney has done it so often, but in parts it equaled Disney's quality . . .: That was how Kenneth Annakin, an expert on cinematic art, reacted to Laird's film, "The Work of Nature: Through the seasons," at the 25th Scottish amateur film festival back in 1963. This particular Laird creation received eight awards in nine national and international contests to date, And it's still going strong.
LAST YEAR, his film, "The Work of Nature in Florida," won a handful of awards here and abroad, and his latest work, "The Work of Nature: The Microaquatic Realm," just last week was named one of the 10 best films in the 36th annual International Cinema Competition where film aspirants from dozens of countries around the world vie for honors.
And Laird does all the work that goes into a film himself. He gets no help anywhere except in the actual processing. He's the writer, the camera man, the sound man, the narrator, the editor, the director and the producer. "I handle the whole ball of wax myself," Laird said as he sat in the office of a local insurance company where he is an executive.
"And when I'm finished, I send the film, duplicates of course, to various contests around the world."
LAIRD LEANED back in his chair, stopped for a moment as he adjusted his glasses, and added, "I'd probably never entered into international competition if my wife hadn't suggested it several years back. And I'm glad she did."
Laird's most recent trio of films have won over a dozen awards in international competition. The experts think all three are equally good, but he thinks his most recent one, "The Microaquatic Realm," is the best of the bunch.
"I shot this last film over a two-month period in Conodoguinet Creek with the aid of a medical microscope . . . and I think it's the best so far."
He said he is working on a film that will deal with all types of underwater life, from microscopic animals to whales. And he has already taken his equipment beneath the ocean's surface where he has filmed, among other things, whales.
"I'VE DESIGNED special devices for filming under water, especially for this film," he said, adding
"I've also designed a variety of gadgets for the camera, including mountings and lenses - one lense I designed was adapted for use by a large college in California,"
Laird, now in his early 30s, started producing films as an avocation, back in 1947. He got some valuable experience while attending Mercersburg Academy and Dickinson College where he filmed various sporting events.
After completing his education, he started going on various field trips where he filmed the various phenomena of nature. Over about a decade, he collected a pile of film about nature and spliced it together, cutting it down considerably into a finished product, and christened it "The Work of Nature Through the Seasons," And it won award after award.
LAIRD BELIEVES amateur film making should not be taken lightly.
"Amateurs have more time to devote to their film making than pros. And many amateur productions, because of the time element, are sometimes better than the professional's work."
He added that many Hollywood professionals take a close look at what the serious amateurs do and often get some helpful insights into new techniques and devises.
He also said amateur film making involves more chance than professional filming.
"There's an element of chance you have to take when you make a nature film. You usually have only one chance to get a particular shot - if you miss, you might never get that chance again."
