Mrs. Sara Catherine Schwartz, widow of Levi Schwartz, died at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John H Diehl, midway between Cashtown and Orrtanna, shortly after midnight this morning, after a brief illness from a complication of diseases. She was aged 50 years, 11 months and 10 days.

Mrs. Schwartz was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Hartzell, and was born in Mt. Joy township, but spent her married life in Franklin township. She was the last surviving member of her family.

She leaves two daughters, Mrs. John H Diehl, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Clara Patterson, wife of the Rev. Mr. Patterson, of Woodsboro, Maryland. Six grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.

Brief funeral services Friday morning at 10:00 from her late home, with further services at 10:30 at Flohr's church. Interment in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Mrs. Anna M Diehl, 68, widow of John H Diehl, died Sunday morning at 6:35 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. Milo F Diehl, McKnightstown, from a complication of diseases following an illness of six years. She formerly lived in Orrtanna, but due to poor health went to live with the Diehl's last April.

The deceased was born in Mt. Joy township, a daughter of the late Levi and Sarah C (Schwartz) Diehl, and was a life long member of Flohr's Lutheran church. She taught school for two years at Scott's schoolhouse, Franklin township. Her husband died in May, 1929. She was a graduate of Shippensburg State Teachers' College.

Surviving are the following sons, Howard C., Fairfield; William S., Orrtanna; Milo F., McKnightstown; one sister, Mrs. Clara E Patterson, Coatesville, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services from the Diehl home Wednesday morning at 10:00 with further services at Flohr's Lutheran church conducted by the deceased pastor, the Rev George H Berkheimer. Interment in Flohr's cemetery.

John H Diehl, 81, retired farmer and school teacher, died at his home in Orrtanna at 6:00, Wednesday evening, after several months illness from a complication of diseases. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Diehl, and was born on the Diehl homestead between Orrtanna and Cashtown, where he resided until five years ago when he moved to Orrtanna.

Beginning at the age of 18 years, Mr. Diehl taught school in Franklin township for 22 years. For a number of years he was a school director in that township. He was a member of Flohr's Lutheran church, and superintendent of the Sunday school for many years.

He is survived by his widow, whose maiden name was Miss Anna M. Schwartz: three sons,

Howard C. Diehl, Orrtanna; Wilmer S. Diehl, Franklin township, and Milo F. Diehl, McKnightstown, bookkeeper at the Citizens trust company here; one brother, Oscar D. Diehl, Biglerville, and one grandson, J. M. Diehl, Orrtanna.

Mr. Diehl had farmed in the Fairfield area his entire life.

He was a member of Flohr's Lutheran Church in McKnightstown. He was former superintendent of Flohr's Lutheran Church Sunday School. He was a charter member of Knouse Food Co-operative. He was a life member of the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Company; and a member of Pennsylvania Farmers Association and Adams County Farmers Association.

He is survived by a son, Kevin J. Diehl of Fairfield; and a grandson.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Flohr's Lutheran Church at McKnightstown, with the Rev. Douglas Y. Boden officiating. Interment will be in Flohr's Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 9 until the time of the service.

She was born December 18, 1921 in Cashtown, PA the daughter of the late Robert D. and Blanche Henry Bream. Dorothy’s husband, John M. Diehl died in 1991.

Mrs. Diehl was a member of Flohrs Lutheran Church in Cashtown where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and with the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a graduate of Gettysburg High School where she played on the girls' basketball team. For a short time she was employed in York, PA as a legal secretary. Dorothy and her husband were involved with various farm groups in the area, and carried a love of gardening with her for most of her life. Most of all she was a beloved mother and grandmother.

She was buried in January 2017 in Flohrs Lutheran Church Cemetery, Franklin Twp., Adams Co., PA, Findagrave #174816519.

Wilmer S Diehl, 85, of Cashtown died Thursday morning at the Gettysburg Hospital where he had been a patient for three and a half weeks.

Born in Orrtanna, he was the son of the late John H and Anna M (Schwartz) Diehl. His wife, the late Esther M (Riggeal) died in 1979.

He was a member of Flohr's Lutheran Church. He was involved Fruit Farming in the Cashtown-Orrtanna area most of his life. He was a former member of the Knouse Food Co-op. He was a member of the Mt. Orchard Corporation. He is a retired School Bus Driver and a 50 year member and past President of Cashtown Fire Company. He was a member of the Cashtown-McKnightstown Senior Citizens.

He is survived by one son, Fredrick R Diehl of Gaithersburg, Md., one brother, Howard C Diehl of Fairfield; and a number of nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 am at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg with the Rev Douglas Y. Boden officiating. Interment will be held at Flohr's Lutheran Cemetery.



He was buried in December 1983 in Flohrs Lutheran Church Cemetery, Franklin Twp., Adams Co., PA.

He was the son of the late Wilmer S. and Esther M. Riggeal Diehl. He was the husband of Rita M. Jaken Diehl for 36 years.

Mr. Diehl was a member of Flohrs Lutheran Church, McKnightstown; the Albert J. Lentz Post 202 of the American Legion; and the Gettysburg Elks. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Diehl was a 1949 graduate of Gettysburg High School and a 1958 graduate of Penn State University. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a grants management specialist until his retirement in 1985.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a number of nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by one brother, David Diehl.

Mrs. Diehl retired after many years of service with the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, working in the New Brunswick, NJ and Washington, DC offices. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Gettysburg.

Survivors include her brother Frank C. Jaken of Bordentown Township, NJ, 2 sisters, A. Nancy Brokaw of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ and Patricia Baldwin of Tampa, FL, nieces, Kathleen A. Dalcourt of Plainsboro, NJ, Jennifer C. Alley of Tampa, FL and a nephew Darryl J. Hills of McDonough, GA.

Seven-Month Old Babe Dies Friday

David Wilmer Diehl, seven-month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson [sic.] S. Diehl, of Orrtanna R. D., died Friday evening at 5:15 o'clock at his home after a week's illness. Heart condition was given as the cause of death.

The baby is survived by his parents, his mother before marriage being Miss Esther M. Riggeal, of Cashtown; one brother, Fred Riggeal; his parental grandmother, Mrs. Anna    M. Diehl, of Orrtanna, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Riggeal, of Cashtown.

The bridegroom is also a graduate of the local high school with the class of 1920 and later completed a course in accounting at the Pennsylvania Business College at Lancaster. He has been connected with Citizen's Trust Company since 1922.

Take extended Trip

After an attractive wedding dinner was served the newly-weds left on a two-week's honeymoon trip by motor through Pennsylvania, new York, Canada, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, taking in the main points of interest along the route such as Niagara Falls, Watkins Glen, West Point and Catskill Mountains.    While in western Pennsylvania they will visit the bride's sister, Mary l. Hartman, who is teaching at Ambridge, and will also visit friends and relative in Greensburg, Philadelphia and New Jersey.

After June 1, the newly-weds will be at home in their newly furnished home in McKnightstown.

Milo F. Diehl, 47, McKnightstown, died at the Warner hospital Thursday afternoon at 3:00 from a complication of diseases. He had been in ill health for two years and was bedfast nine weeks. He was admitted to the hospital January 8.

Mr. Diehl was born in Franklin township, a son of the late John H and Anna M (Schwartz) Diehl. He attended county schools and graduated from Gettysburg high school in 1920. Later he attended a business college in Lancaster and took special work at the American Institute of Banking at York.

He was employed by the Citizens Trust company in 1922 and when it merged with the First National bank became auditor for the bank. He retired in October, 1947, due to ill health.

For the last 23 years Mr. Diehl resided in McKnightstown. He was a member of Flohr’s Lutheran church of which he was superintendent for a number of years. He also taught a Sunday school class.

The deceased was a member of the Woodmen of the World and served as secretary of the Franklin Township school board, retiring due to ill health.

Surviving are his widow, the former Hilda Hartman, to whom he was married 23 years; two daughter, Ruth Jeanne and Anna Mary, both at home, and two brothers, Howard C., Fairfield, and Wilmer S., Cashtown.

Funeral services Sunday at 2:00 pm form the Bender funeral home conducted by the Rev George H Berkheimer. Interment in Flohr’s cemetery.

A member of Flohr’s Lutheran Church, she was a graduate of Shippensburg State Normal School and taught at the Franklin Township Elementary School for 31 years. She had taught Sunday school at Flohr’s Lutheran Church for many years.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Delta Kappa Gamma, the Adams County Retired Teachers Association and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association; a former member of the Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary, Gettysburg Lutheran Home Auxiliary, and Cashtown Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John W. (Ruth) Bream Jr., of Orrtanna and Mrs. George P. (Anna Mary) Fischer of Seven Valleys; one sister, Mary I. Hartman of Cashtown; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, with the Rev Douglas Y. Boden officiating. Interment will be in Flohr’s Cemetery.

Mis Ruth Jeanne Diehl, daughter of Mrs. Milo F. Diehl, McKnightstown, and John W. Bream Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Bream, Orrtanna R. D. 1, were married at 2:30 this afternoon in Flor's Lutheran Church, near McKnightstown, in a double-ring ceremony performed by the Rev. Robert C. Schiebel, Arendtsville. Church decorations included alter vases of white gladioli and carnations, ferns and candelabra. The chancel was decorated with baskets of white gladioli and carnations.

The bride was escorted to the altar by her cousin, John M. Diehl, Fairfield, and was given in marriage by her mother. She wore a gown of imported Chantilly lace and nylon tulle over satin, made with a fitted bodice featuring a sweetheart neckline complemented by a high scalloped lace collar and long sleeves tapered to points over the hands. Her full skirt ended in a chapel-length train, and her fingertip veil of tulle was caught from a Juliet cap trimmed with orange blossoms. Serving as matron of honor, Mrs. Allan Woolford, Benzonia, Mich., and the maid of honor, Miss Anna Mary Diehl, wore Nile green floor-length gowns of nylon tulle over taffeta with matching headbands, In similar attire the bridesmaids were Miss Lila Barnes, Stewartstown; Miss Patrician Klepper, Montoursville; Miss Mildred King, Falls Church, Va., and Miss Jean Musselman, Cashtown, all wearing orchid. The honor attendants carried cascade arrangements of peppermint carnations, stephanotis and ivy. The bridesmaids carried similar bouquets of yellow carnations, stephanotis and ivy.

Serving as bestman was Robert Shunk, Lansdowne. Ushers included Glenn Musselman Jr. Gettysburg; Jacob Bream, McKnightstown; Ray Biesecker, Mechanicsburg; Robert Minter, Narberth, and James Mason, Wynnewood. David Bushman, the church organist, presented a recital prior to the ceremony and accompanied the soloist, Miss Barbara Bream, Cashtown.

After a reception in the social room of Trinity Lutheran Church, Arendtsville, the couple left for the Pocono Mountains. For traveling the bride chose a suit dress of mint green with white accessories. She wore a white corsage.

Upon their return they will reside at the Green Ridge Fruit Farm, Orrtanna, where the bridegroom is associated with his father in fruit growing. Mrs.. Bream is a 1948 graduate of Gettysburg High School and a 1952 graduate of Pennsylvania State College. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta, national social fraternity, and Sigma Alpha Eta, speech and hearing honorary fraternity. For the past year she was employed as a speech correctionist for the Carlisle Area Joint school system. John W. Bream Jr., 74, of 170 Bingaman Road, Orrtanna, died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at the Hershey Medical Center.

Born Sept. 19, 1931 in Gettysburg, he was the son of the late John W. and Zella Minter Bream. He was the husband of Ruth Jeanne Diehl Bream for 52 years.

Mr. Bream was a member of Flohrs Lutheran Church, McKnightstown; the State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania; the Adams County Fruit Growers Association; a member and past president of Cashtown Fire Company; and a charter member of the Cashtown Community Lions Club. He was a graduate of The Perkiomen School in Pennsburg. Mr. Bream was the president of Bream Orchards Inc. in Orrtanna. He was a board member of the Gettysburg Area School District for 12 years. Mr. Bream was a volunteer for Citizens on Patrol for the Volusia County Sherriff's Department in Florida.

Anna Mary Diehl this afternoon will become the bride of George Philip Fischer in a double ring ceremony to be performed at 2:30 o'clock in Flohr's Lutheran church, McKnightstown.

The pastor, Rev. E. Mahlon Clarke, will conduct the service.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Milo F. Diehl, McKnightstown, and the late Mr. Diehl, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Fischer, 219 East Cottage place.

The bride will be given in marriage by her mother and accompanied to the altar by her brother-in-law, John W. Beam, Jr., Orrtanna RD 1.

Miss Diehl will wear a white gown of imported chantilly lace and nylon tulle over satin with sweetheart neckline accented with a high scalloped lace collar and long fitted sleeves. Her full-gathered skirt features a front panel of accordion pleats in nylon tulle with scalloped lace train.

Her finger-tip illusion veil has an open crown cap of chantilly lace trimmed in iridescent sequins and seed pearls with leaves of illusion on each side. She will carry a Bible with a white orchid and streamers of white flowers.

Serving as matron of honor will be the bride's sister, Mrs. John W. Bream, Jr., Orrtanna RD 1. The bridegroom's brother, Edwin L. Fischer, will serve as best man.

The Rev. Dr. Richard S. Patterson, graduate of Gettysburg College and seminary and pastor of the Salem Lutheran charge in Carroll County, died suddenly Wednesday morning in the parsonage at 162 Pennsylvania avenue, Westminster. He was in his 64th year and had been ill several months from complications.

Dr. Patterson received the degree of doctor of divinity from Le Noir college, Hickory, N.C. At time of death he was serving as president of the Carroll county ministerial union, president of the Maryland Sunday School association, and missionary president of the middle conference.

During his active ministerial career he served charges at Woodsboro, Md., Berlin, Pa., Philadelphia, Coatesville, as secretary of the home mission board of the United Lutheran synod in the south, in Charlotte, N.C. a second time at Woodsboro, and for the last five years in Carroll County where his charge consisted of St. Benjamin's (Krider's) and St. John's (Leister's) Lutheran churches.

Charlotte, Feb. 26. --(AP)-- Word was received here today of the death of Dr. Richard S. Patterson, former general secretary of the board of home missions for the United Lutheran Synod, south, with headquarters in Charlotte. Dr, Patterson died at Westminster, Md., where he was pastor of a Lutheran church, according to Rev. Robert L. Patterson, Lutheran minister, of charlotte.

He was a native of Cabarrus county and began his study for the ministry at Mount Pleasant. In 1915 he was awarded a D. D. degree by Lenoir-Rhyne college.
