Obituary – Springfield News-Sun, Springfield, Ohio; Thursday, 5 APR 2012, page C4 (Newspapers.com):
HOLYCROSS, Amy Marie
Amy Marie Holycross, 31
Amy left her temporary vessel on April 2, 2012.
INTERVIEWER: Please state your name and information.
AMY: Amy Holycross. I was born on November 26, 1980 in Springfield, OH. I am a blessed mother of 3 amazing boys, Jacob (9), Carter (7) & Izac (6). My parents are Dave & Judy Ray of Springfield and Garrel Estep of Urbana. I have 1 sister Rebecca Downey and 3 brothers Chad Estep, Scott Estep and Ryan Ray.
INTERVIEWER: Now, you have participated in 4 clinical trials to help advance Melanoma cancer research?
AMY: Yep.
INTERVIEWER: Incredible! If I can be so bold, your contributions to cancer research will ALWAYS be greater than the appreciation you’re received.
AMY: It’s fine. I’d do it all over again if it meant that a mother could have a little more time with her kids. Dr. Felix called me a “courageous woman” and others said that I was the strongest woman they had ever met, but I didn’t do it to get compliments. I just love people and I felt I owed it to my boys to try everything that I could.
INTERVIEWER: When I say “October 16, 2011” what comes to mind?
AMY: Ahhh that’s the day I found God! Or should I say “He found me?!” I had been running for so long, but He just kept chasing me! I praise Him!
INTERVIEWER: To your 3 boys … what do you want to say to them right now?
AMY: To Jacob: You took such good care of me when I was sick. You helped your brothers so much! Mommy asked a lot of you, but ya did great! I need you to protect your brothers now, stand-up for them and be a good example for them because they’re watching you. You are my strong son … my little warrior. To Carter: Oh, my little ham and daredevil. That big brain of yours is always working! The questions you ask seem far deeper than that of a typical 7 year old. I will miss watching you work so hard to bring smiles to people’s faces. Keep doing that … the world needs to laugh more. To Izac: There was a time when we weren’t sure if you would ever sit-up on your own, much less ever walk. Now look at ya! You’re only 6 and already chasing the ladies! You do have your fair share of ladies chasing you, too. I don’t like it! (laughter). I’m gonna miss that sweet smile and those adorable dimples. My baby, I would give anything to hold you on my lap one more time.
INTERVIEWER: You were one who put others’ needs before our own. ‘Selfless’ and “caring” I believe would best describe you. You began to get involved with The Salvation Army in Springfield. It seemed like a perfect fit for you as it provided an avenue to channel your passion and love for others that stemmed from your love for God. How important was that to you?
AMY: I never had a lot of material possessions and I was ok with that. I realized that that was not where true happiness was found. I guess my life could best be summed-up by this quote (I’ve changed a few of the words, though (hehe): “If you want happiness for an hour, watch American Idol. If you want happiness for a day, lounge around the house in you pj’s. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, server others.”
INTERVIEWER: You fought for so long and now your struggle is over. Well done, Amy. Come, take my hand now. I can’t wait to show you the place I’ve prepared for you ...
A Celebration of Amy’s life will be held at Jackson, Lytle & Lewis Life Celebration Center, 2425 N. Limestone, Springfield, OH on Friday, April 6, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. with Funeral Service at the same location of Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery.
Amy leaves behind three growing boys. To keep them with their immediate family, an addition needs to be made to their uncle’s house; therefore to help the family, memorial contributions may be made to the Holycross-Estep Donation Fund at US Savings Bank at 1500 Hillcrest Ave., Springfield, OH 45504.
