Betty Louise Myers was born on 28 June 1923 in Springfield, Clark Co., OH. She married George William Whalen on 27 November 1948 in Clark Co., OH; Betty was first married to Henry Franklin Bowen on 18 AUG 1941 at Georgetown, Ohio. Henry was born 16 MAY 1919, son of Edward B. and Minnie C. (Queen) Bowen. Pfc. Henry Bowen enlisted in the U.S. Army on 13 OCT 1942 at Ft. Hayes, Columbus, Ohio, and was killed in action in France on 4 JUL 1944. He is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Findagrave.com memorial #35297203.

Betty's first two sons, William and Donald, were born to her marriage with Henry Bowen. They later took their step-father's Whalen surname. She died on 15 December 2009 in Springfield, Clark Co., OH,

BETTY L. WHALEN, 86, of Springfield, died Tuesday morning, December 15, 2009 in her daughter's home following a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Springfield on July 28, 1923 the daughter of H. Earl and Hazel (Baker) Myers.

Betty worked as a beautician at Tres' Chic Beauty Salon for 45 years.

Survivors include her five children and spouses, Bill and Betty Whalen of Springfield, Donnie and Barb Whalen of Venice, Florida, Kathy and Greg Day of Kettering, Larry and Debbie Whalen of Springfield and Georgy Harris of Springfield; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Whalen; daughter, Teresa Raponi; son-in-law, Mark S. Harris; and two brothers.

A service to celebrate Betty's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor David Hill officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.

The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude to Katie, Kim, Jessie, Abby, and Tammy at Community Mercy Hospice for the loving care given to Betty during her illness.

George William Whalen was born on 5 December 1919 in Springfield, Clark Co., OH; son of Edward and Anna (Daugherty) Whalen of Springfield, Ohio. He married Betty Louise Myers, daughter of Hiram Earl Myers and Hazel Lulu Baker, on 27 November 1948 in Clark Co., OH; Betty was first married to Henry Franklin Bowen on 18 AUG 1941 at Georgetown, Ohio. GEORGE W. WHALEN

George W. Whalen, 34, a plumbing superintendent for the Boyd-Lemmon Co., died unexpectedly at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday in his residence, 1537 Shelby dr.

A son of Edward and Anna Daugherty Whalen, he was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Springfield. He was a member of St. Teresa Church and Local 97 of the AFL Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. He also was plumbing superintendent for the Boyd Lemmon Co. Mr. Whalen attended Catholic Central High School.

Surviving are his widow, Betty; three sons, Donald, William and Lawrence; two daughters, Teresa and Kathleen; his mother; two brothers, Edward and Richard Whalen of Springfield; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Klenke, Mrs. Mary Wilson and Mrs. Anna Shay of Springfield, and several nieces and nephews.

The body was taken to the O’Brien-Kenney funeral home where friends may call from Wednesday evening until time of services at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Teresa Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

William Robert "Bill" Whalen was born on 6 December 1942 in Springfield, Clark Co., OH; Bill's biological father was Henry Bowen, Betty's first husband and a WW II casualty. He and his full brother Donald were raised by George Whalen, until George passed in 1954. Bill and Donald both took the Whalen surname. He married Elizabeth Margaret Poor on 7 October 1966 in Springfield, Clark Co., OH; ceremony by Rev. Lawrence Pugh, pastor, The First Lutheran Church of Springfield, Ohio. Margaret had an out-of-wedlock son, Alan Poor aka Allen K. Whalen, born 20 DEC 1962 at Springfield, Ohio. She subsequently was married to, and then divorced from Homer Griffith, and had a son Mark Griffith aka Mark Jeffery Whalen, born 4 SEP 1964 in Springfield. Mark Griffith took the Whalen surname, married Carla Sue (Guenther) Wilson in 1992, and divorced in 1995 with a daughter, Tara Michelle Whalen born 27 MAY 1993. Bill Whalen remarried to Betty (Jeffers) (Smouse) Matthews about 2008. He and Elizabeth Margaret Poor were divorced on 12 September 1988 in Clark Co., OH. William Robert "Bill" Whalen, age 81, of Springfield, passed away on April 24, 2024. He was born in Springfield on December 6, 1942, the son of George and Betty (Myers) Whalen.

Bill retired from Moyno, a division of Robbins and Myers, following 42 years of dedicated service. In his free time, bill enjoyed riding his motorcycle and spending time outdoors on the open road. Bill was an avid gardener. One of his favorite hobbies was building and flying model airplanes of all kinds. Bill was a loving husband and devoted family man. His quiet, gentle soul touched the hearts of many and he would help anyone in need.

Bill leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 16 years, Betty Jeffers Whalen; children, Robert Smouse, Kimberly (Benjamin Dutton) Matthews and Michael (Alyce) Matthews; grandchildren, Jacob, Mark and Kaleb McCoy, Cheyenne Smouse, Michael III, Cherokee and Austin Matthews; numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters, along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Teresa and his in-laws, Guy (Daisy) Jeffers; grandson, Arthur Lanum Jr.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, May 2, 2024 from 10:30 to 11:30 am, where a celebration of Bill's life will begin at 11:30am. He will be laid to rest at Vale Cemetery


NOTE: Robert E. Smouse, born 31 JAN 1970, was Betty's son from her first marriage, to Harold E. Smouse (1948-1999). Kimberly Sue (1973) and Michael Matthews (1976) were Betty's children with her second husband, Michael Wayne Matthews (1954-2019). Conspicuously missing from this obituary are Bill's daughters from his first marriage, Jennifer Jo (Whalen) Elsner, and Lori Kathleen (Whalen) Crickmore, along with their children.
