Burglar Raymond Young Placed On FBI Wanted List
Washington, Nov. 12 (AP) – The FBI today put a 39-year-old “lone wolf” house-burglar on its list of “10 most wanted men.”
He is Raymond Edward Young, native of Lincoln, Nebr., many times in prison for theft.
Young escaped from California state prison, at Soledad, in August, 1948. Les (sic) than two months later, a policeman in Los Angeles stopped a car on the street for a routine traffic check. The driver struck the officer in the face, shot him in the leg and ran from the scene.
This, according to the bureau, was Young. His abandoned car, a stolen one, contained a revolver, ammunition and the loot from several house-breakings that occurred after his prison escape.
Young is now sought as a fugitive across state lines to avoid prosecution for assault and burglary.
He is of medium height and weight, with curly brown hair and blue eyes. He has the head of a Gypsy woman tattooed on his lower left arm and a one-inch scar on the point of his chin. He sometimes wears glasses.
Young went on the “most wanted” list as a replacement for Morley Vernon King who was picked up in Philadelphia 12 days ago. He was accused of killing his wife at San Luis Obispo, Calif., in 1947.

L.A. Fugitive Held in Colorado Loses Fight Against Extradition
DENVER, Dec. 4 (U.P.) – Gov. Dan Thornton today granted California’s request for the custody of Raymond Edward Young, whose neighbors fought to prevent his extradition following the escaped convict’s arrest as one of the FBI’s 10 most-wanted men..
Despite lengthy petitions submitted by Young’s acquaintances who pleaded that he had “gone straight” since his escape from a California prison gang, Thornton said he felt it his duty to return the fugitive.
Governor’s Attitude
“I can’t make the State of Colorado a sanctuary for habitual criminals,” Thornton said following the extradition hearing held in his office.
“If I refused to extradite this man with his long record and he committed any further crimes in Colorado, I would feel myself responsible.”
Young’s wife was led weeping from the Governor’s office by a woman companion. She refused to speak to reporters but Young’s lawyers said they probably will not try to press the fight to keep Young from returning to California.
Scores of neighbors, including a former district judge, had petitioned the Governor not to grant the extradition request because of Young’s clean record since he came here and assumed a new name.
Young was known as Donald L. Sherman to his wife, their friends here and his fellow workers at a Denver bakery when FBI agents arrested him.
Two Los Angeles policemen were waiting for Denver jailers to turn Young over to them as soon as the necessary legal formalities were completed.

Stray Bullet Kills Young Esparto Shooter On Creek
ESPARTO, Yolo Co. -- A 13 year old Esparto youth, Doyle Young, was killed yesterday in an accidental shooting on Cache Creek, north of here, where he was target shooting with a group of boys.
Deputy Coroner Roger Smith said Young was hit below the heart with a .22 caliber bullet. The shot apparently came from a second group of boys who were shooting about 250 yards downstream.
With the Young boy at the time of the shooting were George Carroll, 17, and his brother, Robert, 14, of Esparto.
In the second group were Fulton Stephens, Mike Tadlock, and Bradley Wescoate, all Esparto teenagers. Deputy Coroner Smith said these boys were apparently unaware that Young and the Carroll brothers were in the area.
The victim was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Young of Esparto.

12 Year Old Fired Shot In Esparto Fatality
WOODLAND, Yolo Co. -- Deputy Coroner Roger Smith reported the .22 caliber bullet which claimed the life of Doyle Wayne Young, 13, of Esparto, Yolo County, came from the rifle of 12 year old Mike Tadlock of Esparto. Smith has ruled the shooting of last Saturday on Cache Creek north of Esparto as accidental.
The deputy reported the Tadlock youth and his companions, Fulton Stephens and Bradley Wescoatt, were target practicing about 250 yards downstream from the victim and his two companions who were shooting also.
The Tadlock boy and his companions told officers they did not see the victim and his companions, George, and Robert Carroll.
Smith made the determination Wednesday after receiving results of ballistics tests from the state bureau of criminal identification and investigation.
The deputy coroner called the parents of all three boys into his office to tell them of the results before making the public announcement.

Shooting Death Probe Leads to Weapons Count
ESPARTO, Yolo Co. – Nickie D. Yeiser, 23, of Woodland, Yolo County, arrested as the result of investigation into the accidental fatal shooting of 13 year old Doyle Wayne Young of Esparto, will be sentenced April 1st in the Esparto Judicial District Court.
Yeiser, who works on guns as a hobby, pleaded guilty yesterday of furnishing concealable guns to minors under 18 years of age.
Deputy Sheriff Keith Culley reported Yeiser traded a cut down .22 caliber rifle with pistol grip to Robert Carroll, 14, who was with the victim when he was shot Saturday afternoon while target shooting along Cache Creek north of Esparto.

Kettleman man dies in accident
AVENAL – A Kettleman city man was killed early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle traffic accident on Highway 269 north of Avenal, a spokesman for the Kings County Coroner’s Office said.
Darrell Alan Young, 31, was northbound on Highway 269 when his car drifted off the west edge of the road and went into a ravine, said deputy coroner Bill Willard.
Young was thrown from the vehicle and appears to have died instantly of massive head injuries. His body was found about 11 a.m. Thursday morning by a CalTrans worker.
Willard said he could not discuss the cause of the accident, and is waiting for laboratory results to determine if Young was under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance when his vehicle left the road.
