Whereas, on the 12th day of March, 1899, the Great and Supreme Ruler of the universe has in His infinite wisdom removed from among us our highly esteemed friend and neighbor, John B. Stiffler.

“Unle John,” (sic) as he was familiarly known, was born in Pennsylvania in 1818 but removed to Indiana with his parents when but a child. He then lived with his parents and worked at the hatters trade until he was grown. Like many of the pioneers of his day he sought the wild West and came to Southwest Mo. Where he lived for a few years and then went to North Arkansas where he was married to Miss Martha Brumblelow (sic) in 1844. He then took up a home where the present site of Harrison now stands and where he remained until the breaking out of the civil war and like all good loyal men the southern confederacy was to hot (sic) for his blood and he was compelled to move out for protection and settled near Nixa, Christian county. He jointed the militia and made himself useful in protecting his home. In 1886 (sic) his wife died and left him a house full of children to take care of. In 1867 he married Lucinda Farr near Nixa, Christian county. Uncle John moved to the Leonard McIlaffie farm near Forsyth in 1872 and lived there about 13 years and by his economy and industry was able to buy a farm of his own. Uncle John was perfectly honest and upright in his dealings, he never went in debt or asked favors but was an obliging neighbor when he thought it was deserving. He leaves a wife and seven children with a host of friends to mourn his loss.
