Civic leader Marjorie Olsen dies at 80
A community organizer, she advocated for children’s rights

Civic activist Marjorie W. Olsen, who helped establish mental health and child care services in Brevard County in the 1960s, died Monday at Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach. She was 80.
Born in Owosso, Mich., and raised in Green Bay, Wis., Olsen moved to Cocoa Beach in 1958 from Morristown, N.J.
Long an advocate for the rights and needs of children and women, Olsen was a founder and board member of the Child Care Association of Brevard County. The association grew out of her awareness of children left unattended while their parents worked and of older children who missed school to care for younger siblings.
Olsen mobilized a network of volunteers who started a day-care program in the South Brevard area. From there, she was able to get a small grant to start a summer program for disadvantaged children in Central Brevard.
“Today, thanks to her efforts and perseverance, there is a large network of organizations and individuals supporting child-care services for working parents as well as early childhood education programs, not only in Brevard County but throughout the state and nation,” said Barbara Moore, executive director of the association.
In honor of her tremendous commitment, the board of directors created a special annual award in 1987 called the Marjorie Olsen Child Advocacy Award. In addition, she was selected to represent Florida this year for a special humanitarian award sponsored by the National Head Start Association, Moore said.
Olsen was a member of the League of Women Voters since her 20s and was past president of the Space Coast League of Women Voters. Through the league she was able to work with lawmakers on children’s and social issues.
“Marge always felt people could have an influence if they understood the issues,” said longtime friend Nora Sterritt of Cape Canaveral. “I think she made a difference. She was one of the props of the community and we’re all going to miss her very much.”
“Marge was the conscience of the community,” said League President Anne Underhill of Cocoa Beach.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Marvin Olsen of Cocoa Beach, who supported her in all her efforts. She also is survived by her daughters, Donna Satterfield of Independence, Calif., and Susan Olsen of Anchorage, Alaska; and sisters, Dorothy Clayton of Waupaca, Wis., June Barnett of Elmira, N.Y., and Heidi Wood of Hanover, N.H.
No calling hours are scheduled. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Friday at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home in Cocoa Beach.
The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made to the Child Care Association of Brevard County Inc., 18 Harrison St., Cocoa, 32922, or to the Space Coast League of Women Voters, in care of Anne Underhill, 123 June Drive, Cocoa Beach, 32931.
