A graveside service for Robert L. Mathias, 78, of Granville, will be held at 11 a.m. July 27 in Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville with the Rev. Karen J. Chakoian officiating and the Licking County Veterans Alliance presenting military honors.

Mr. Mathias, a retired operator for the Kroger Co. at the Tamarack Dairy in Newark, died June 23, 2002, at the Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Mich.

He was born Sept. 20, 1923, in Columbus, to the late J.F. and Faye (Perry) Mathias. Mr. Mathias was a 1941 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School. He served during World War II with the U.S. Army in the 61st Chemical Depot Company.

Mr. Mathias was a member of the Central Christian Church in Newark, the Raccoon Valley Conservation Club, the Land of Legend Fly Fishers, 40+8 and the Loyal Order of Moose in Riverview, Fla. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 398 in Granville and a charter member of the Am-Vets. He was a family man, an avid outdoorsman, repairman and storyteller. As a veteran, he served his country with quiet dignity.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Don (Butch) Curtis of Granville, Marlene and Richard Butler of Newark, and Barbara and Don (Gunthor) Hunter of Granville; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Melissa Mathias of Newark; grandchildren, Chris Curtis and his wife, Barcy, Casey Curtis and his wife, Erin, Cameron Curtis, Shaun Hutchinson, Hailee and Hannah Mathias, and Dustin Butler; great-grandsons, Chase and Alex Curtis; brother and sister-in-law, John and Ethel Mathias of Riverview, Fla.; and sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Bill Carr of New Albany.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Marjorie E. Mathias, who died Aug. 10, 2001; and sisters, Darlene Dorris and Mary Henry.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the McPeek Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville.Memorial contributions may be made to the Raccoon Valley Conservation Club, P.O. She married Wiliam Wayne Carr on 18 March 1985 in Franklin Co., OH; William was first married to Betty Dolores Wolfe in 1949 and had three sons, Ronald, Randy and Ricky. They divorced in 1975. Since the 1985 marriage record indicates William had two prior marriages, there was a apparently a brief second marriage after the 1975 divorce. Norma J. Carr, age 74, Wellston, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at the Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She was born January 24, 1933 to the late Jermiah (sic) and Samantha Perry Mathias. She is survived by her husband, William Carr; daughter Peggy King of Jackson; step-sons, Ronald and Linda Carr of Indiana, Randy and Linda Carr of Columbus and Rickie and Sally Carr of Gahanna, brother, John Mathias of Riverview, Florida. She is also survived by three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews with a special niece, Christy Arbaugh.
