Note: In the year 1785 Merrick married his first cousin, contrary to Friend's principles, for which breach of discipline they were both disowned the same year by the Monthly Meeting. A minute was located in Exter Meeting records, stating that in the year 1812, Merrick and Ann Starr made acknowledgements "for marring contrary to the good order of Friends" from within the limits of Short Creek Monthly Meeting in Ohio; and as a result they were both accepted and reinstated as members.
