The Smith family lived on the edge of Zanesville and Wayne Twp.. the story handed down in our family claimed she was the first white female born in Wayne Twp., but her death record states she was born in Zanesville. She was born Nov. 5, 1807 in a log cabin high on the bank of the south River Rd.

Here is a story that Libby Clapper (1909-1982) told of her Great Great Grandmother Rebecca Smith Clapper in her own words: "Rebecca was the midwife for the family and the neighbors. When my mother (Dessie Dutro) was 4 years old, a new baby was on the way (Harry Emerson Dutro 1877). Her mother sent her to get Great Grandma Becky. It was at least a mile and a half but she made it alright and Great Grandma Becky came back and helped deliver the baby. At that time she was 79 years old. My mother liked to visit with Becky , because she always had a treat for her. Becky smoked a pipe and would sit by the fireplace and the smoke, would swirl up the chimney. Mother liked that and she said that she never saw another woman smoke a pipe and she never forgot her Great Grandmother although she died when My mother (Dessie) was but 5 years old."

She was buried in April 1888 in Blue Rock Baptist Cemetery, Blue Rock Twp., Muskingum Co., OH, Findagrave #9772553.
