"The War of the Rebellion was finally ended and the boys in blue and gray returned to their homes. To many the homes were not the same they had left years before.
"Isaac Vogelgesang, like many others, had returned from the war with what was left of his regiment and immediately started for Canton, O., where his parents still lived.
"Canton was then a town of about 6,000 inhabitants. Here William McKinley, later President McKinley, was teaching school after the war near the Vogelgesang home. Mr. Saxton (father of Mrs. McKinley) and the elder Vogelgesang were old friends and neighbors.
"Isaac took up the harness trade upon his return home, working at this for about two years.
"But Canton did not appeal to him as it once did. Somebody was missing in the town. He had left a girl behind him when he went to war (but as was the custom in those days and is today to a large extent with pastors), the preacher at Canton had been moved and he had taken his daughter with him--far away--over the Illinois prairies to a little town named Forreston.
"The long days of the war had often been cheered by a letter or a gift from this preacher's daughter and Isaac's thoughts were with this girl over in Illinois while he was forced to remain at work at Canton.
"But Uncle Sam did the best he could do in those days and Isaac carried on his courtship by mail, and finally succeeded in getting the right answer to a question he had asked and throwing his apron away and gathering a few of his belongings he started for Illinois and his wife to be.
"Isaac reached Forreston on December 9, 1867, and the next day, December 10, 1867, with Delilah Stahley drove fourteen miles to Freeport Ill., where they were married in the Evangelical parsonage by Rev. William Dickover. The young couple returned to the home of the bride's father that afternoon and immediately went on a short wedding trip to Plainfield, Ill., to the home of an uncle of Mr. Vogelgesang, Mr. Louis Triem.
"After a few weeks Mr. and Mrs. Vogelgesang returned to Forreston, where Mr. Vogelgesang engaged in the lumber business with his father-in-law, Mr. Andrew Stahley, who had retired from the ministry.
"The young man spent all his spare hours in helping to build a home for his bride and himself, remaining at the home of Mr. Stahley in the meantime.
"A niece of Mr. Vogelgesang, Miss Alice Hauptfuehrer, was adopted by them when ten years of age and stayed in the family until her marriage to Rev. Frank Neitz. With her husband she went to Japan as a missionary of the Evangelical Association. While there she was stricken with small pox and died.
"On January 22, 1880, a daughter, Elta Josephine, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Vogelgesang. She attended the schools of Forreston and after graduation taught school for three years.
"Mr. Vogelgesang shortly sold his lumber interest and entered the grocery business. He retired in 1894 and devoted part of his time to real estate.
"Mr. Vogelgesang has been a lifelong member of the Evangelical Church acting as superintendent of the Sabbath School for many years. He was five times a member of the General Conference. In local interests he has always been active, being a director of the public schools for many years.
"As a charter member of the Grand Army of the Republic of Forreston, Ill., he served as commander for five years. He is also connected with the Odd Fellows order.
"In 1901, on May 1 the daughter Elta was married to Edwin H. Forkel of Chicago. They have three children, Edwin Jr., Laverne, and Elta Lila, and the family now reside in Oak Park Ill.
"In 1913, after a residence of thirty-six years in Forreston, Ill., the Vogelgesangs moved to Naperville, Ill., their present home.
"They are members of Grace Evangelical Church.
"Mr. Vogelgesang has identified himself with the G.A.R. Post at Naperville and is at present Senior Commander."
