Jack Frank Johnston was born on 14 November 1886 in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA; son of Frank Ogent and Hilma Carolina (Swanson) Johnson, natives of Sweden. His birth name was Frank Ogent Johnson, Jr. By the time he married, he was using Jack Frank Johnston, which he continued to use for the rest of his life.
Tracy DeVault research (AUG 2024):
"Jack Frank Johnston Sr. was first married to Katherine Bennett (daughter of Delbert F. Bennett and Alma Tower. They were married on July 7, 1920. They were not married very long because Jack married Ethel May Hughes on 4 Nov 1923.
Jack Frank Johnston was born on 14 Nov 1886 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. His parents were Frank Orgent Johnson and Hilma Carolina Swanson. (Johnson is the correct spelling of Frank’s original surname.) Both Frank and Hilma (sometimes spelled Helma) were born in Sweden. Jack Frank Johnston’s birth name was Frank Orgent Johnson Jr. He used that name until sometime in the early 1900s, probably about the time he moved to Oregon. Certainly by the time he married Katherine Bennett he had changed his name to Jack Frank Johnston. In most public records Jack listed is occupation as Electrical Draftsman.
It is always possible that I have confused two different people; however, this time I don’t think so. When Jack Frank Johnston applied for his Social Security number he gave the name of his parents as Frank O. Johnston and Caroline Swanson. Jack’s Social Security Number was 543-09-8048. For some reason he gave his birth date as 14 Nov 1882.
Jack Frank Johnston died on 30 May 1959. At the time he was living in the Victoria Nursing Home in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. His death certificate gives his birth date as 14 Nov 1886. It list his cause of death as Congestive Heart Failure. Most importantly, his death certificate lists his parents as Frank Johnston and Hilma Swanson.
Speculation: There are a number of reasons a person might change their name. Here are a few: 1) Jack Frank Johnston was 31 years old when congress passed the Selective Service Act for World War I. The act required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register. I did not find a World War I Draft Registration Card for Jack under either of his names. He may have changed his name to avoid registering for the draft. 2) A relationship or marriage that had gone bad. 3) Some sort of altercation with the law.
Okay, now for the most important public record. Many people born before about 1905 did not have a birth certificate. In order to sign up for Social Security one needed to establish their birthdate. Most states set up a process to apply for a “Delayed Birth Certificate.”
On 2 Mar 1941 the state of Iowa issued a Delayed Birth Registration for Frank Orgent Johnson. The document says that Frank was born on 14 Nov 1886 in Des Moines, Iowa. It also says that Frank’s parents were Frank Orgent Johnson and Hilma Carolina Swanson. The person vouching for this birth record was Emily Octavia Wigren. Emily says that she is Frank Orgent Johnson Junior’s aunt. Additional information provided to establish the birth date was the 1900 Census, a school record and a newspaper clipping. I have attached a copy of this delayed birth registration document. I have not located the 1900 Census that was referenced.
Looking at other public records, it appears that Frank Orgent Johnson Junior used that name during the time he lived in Iowa. I think the last Iowa record I found was the 1905 Iowa State Census. He was 20 years old at the time and listed his name as Frank O. Johnson.
So, Jack Frank Johnston and Frank Orgent Johnson Junior have the same parents, they were born on the same day and in the same place.
Emily Octavia (Swenson or Svensen) Burke-Wigren was born 15 Apr 1868 in Kalmar, Sweden and died 9 Feb 1943 in Oakland, Alameda County, California. Her surname is similar to Hilma Caroline Swanson and she is likely Hilma’s sister. Also, Emily named her daughter, Hilma." He married
Ethel May Hughes, daughter of
David Hughes and
Lillian Linville, on 4 November 1923 in Oakland, Douglas Co., OR; Note: It appears that Jack first married Katherine Bennett on 7 Jul 1920. Katherine was the daughter of Delbert F. Bennett and Alma Tower. Jack Frank Johnston died on 30 May 1959 in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR,
