William Tallman
M, #27966, b. 25 March 1720, d. 13 February 1791
Parents
Biography
William Tallman was born on 25 March 1720 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. He married
Anne Lincoln, daughter of
Mordecai Lincoln and
Hannah Salter, on 20 October 1740 in Berks Co., PA. William Tallman died on 13 February 1791 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA.
He was buried in February 1791 in Foot of Massanutton Mountain, Rockingham Co., VA.
Note:
From The Lincoln Family History by Waldo Lincoln page 52: Anne (Anne Lincoln) so spelled in her father's will, but the Tallman Bible omits the final "e". The dates in this family record are taken from the Tallman Family Bible, in which many of the years are so worn as to be illegible. The record was copied by Miss Mary Josephine Roe of Gilbert, Ohio, a great-great-granddaughter of Anne Lincoln, and is printed in "The Ancestry of Abraham Lincoln," Page 176, born March 8, 1725; died Dec. 22, about 1812, on a farm near Harrisonburg, Virginia. She married Oct. 20, 1740 or 1741 (certainly before Jan. 17, 1742, when her step-mother made William Tallman her attorney, calling him her son-in-law), William, son of Benjamin and Patience (Durfee) Tallman of Warwick, Rhode Island. (The only evidence that William is the son of the above is a statement in the Tallman Family bible that William was born in Bode Island in 1720). Born March 25, 1720, at Portsmouth, Rhode Island; died February 13, 1791, in Rockingham County, Virginia. The year is illegible in the Bible, but a deed on record in Berks County, PA, shows that his will was proved in 1791, in Rockingham County. They were living in 1742, at Amity, and various deeds recorded in Berks County prove that they continued to live in that county until 1780, he being taxed from 1768 to 1780 as an inn-keeper at Reading, whither he had probably removed about the first named date, as in 1770 he deeded his homestead in Amity to his son Benjamin. That he was an inn-keeper before removing to Reading is probable, from his purchase in 1754 from Roger Rogers, his mother-in-law's husband, of what seems to have been a country tavern but which he sold in the following year. He probably removed to Virginia in 1780 or 1781, in which latter year his wife purchased land there. They lived on Smith's Run, at the foot of Massanutten mountain, near her brother John. Anna Tallman
F, #27976, b. 15 December 1778, d. 7 October 1866
Parents
Biography
Anna Tallman was born on 15 December 1778 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA.
1 She married
Percy Percy in 1795. She married
Lewis Scothorn on 4 November 1800 in Rockingham Co., VA. She married
William Turner after December 1815. She died on 7 October 1866 in Pickaway Co., OH.
Anna Tallman lived on 19 August 1850 in Walnut Twp., Pickaway Co., OH.
2 Note:
per Herbert C. Probst 13173 County Road 215, Findley, Ohio 45840:
"In 1805 Lewis Scothorn left Virginia and crossed to Ohio. He took up a goodly piece of land in Walnut Twp., in Pickaway Co., Ohio, which although then was of a wild and unsettled section, was favourably located as to water, the first consideration among our pioneer fathers. He had married Anna Tallman (2nd) and six sons and two daughters were born to them bearing the names of Lewis, John, William, George, Charles, Samuel, Eliza and Sarah. Lewis Scothorn died in 1816, having lived in Walnut Twp. during the whole of his life in Ohio. He was a typical pioneer and gained a great local reputation as a woodsman, a great hunter and maker of moccasins. He was a man of great industry and began the clearing of the pioneer farm which he did not live to complete."
Anna Tallman had married first in Rockingham Co., a Mr. (James?) Piercy and they had two children: James Piercy who married (1) Nellie Peters; (2nd) Sally Noble and had 8 children - he died at Canal Winchester, Ohio; and Delilah Piercy who married Thomas Anderson and had 6 children - she died in Pickaway Co., Ohio.
"The widow of Lewis Scothorn subsequently married (third) a Mr. Turner and was generally known in her age as Grandmother Turner in her neighborhood, where she lived to advanced years.." (Mr. Turner died not long after this marriage).
Annah (Tallman) Piercy, Scothorn, Turner resided at the home of her son, Lewis S. Scothorn and his wife, Susannah Westenhaver and their six children. (1850 Census as quoted in "The Scothorn Family", by Ralph H. Lane 1955, page 55).
Note also that some descendants insist on the name as being "Annah", although she signed "Anna".
"Lewis Scothorn, the founder of the family in Ohio, lies in an old burying ground north of East Ringgold in a spot not far from the place where he first located when he came to Ohio. Where, in his day, waved the tall grass that concealed the richness of fertile land beneath, or grew the dense forest that harbored both wild beast and savage, now smile cultivated fields and on the pleasant slopes live his descendants, who, in his memory wish to preserve the old records. Full as they may be, they can never entirely portray the type of man who was able to leave an old civilized section and successfully combat the hardships and face the discouragements incident to establishing a home in an unbroken wilderness."
Taken in part, from "A History of Pickaway county, Ohio and Representative Citizens" by Aaron R. Van Cleaf 1906 pages 469-473. (in quotes) and "The Scothorn Family" by Ralph Lane. This data also came from the Greater Tallman Newsletter Autumn Issue, No. 11 1987, page 2.
Note: The 1850 census actually shows Anna Turner, age 74, living with her granddaughter Catherine (Trone) Long's family. DLB 2012.
