James Wells Tallman
M, #28380, b. 28 June 1802, d. 23 November 1859
Parents
Biography
James Wells Tallman was born on 28 June 1802 in Wellsburg, Augusta Co., VA (now Pendleton Co.; WV.)
1 He married
Margaret Minter, daughter of
William Minter and
Mary Stevenson, on 16 January 1834 in Madison Co., OH. James Wells Tallman died on 23 November 1859 in Knox Co., MO.
Note:
Some descendants of James Tallman and Margaretta Minter reside today (1997) in the Columbus, Ohio area, Gerald B. Tallman being one of them. James Henry (1852-1926) attended the private school held in the upper rooms of the Red Brick Tavern. The school teachers were some of the Minter sisters. The inn on the National Road was built by Stanley Watson. There were six Minter sisters, daughters of William and Mary (Stevenson) Minter. They were: Elizabeth, Sarah, Effie who married Stanley Watson, Margaret who married James Wells Tallman, Mary and Ann. Sons were John and Crawford. There is a Minter-Tallman Watson family plot in the Deer Creek Cemetery near Lafayette, Ohio, west of Columbus.
The Red Brick Tavern was established in 1837 and is located on the Old National Road, now old route 40 at Lafayette, halfway between Columbus and Springfield. Ohio's second oldest Inn offers traditional American fare in the historic atmosphere of a centuries old inn. A specialty is their cinnamon rolls and old fashioned apple butter. The tavern has been the scene of history in the making. Artists drawings of six presidents of the United States who visited the Red Brick hang in the President's Room at the tavern. They are John Tyler, Warren G. Harding, Martin Van Buren, John Quincy Adams, William Henry Harrison and Zachary Tayler. It is said that other travelers were: Henry Clay, James Polk, and Andrew Jackson on their way by stagecoach through Franklinton (Columbus) to Washington.
A large barn at the rear of the Red Brick housed horses for mail relay riders. The first cook stove in Madison Co., was installed in the kitchen of the Red Brick Tavern. It was an object of great curiosity. There were 24 rooms for travelers. To the west of the entrance is the barroom and towards the east is the ladies' parlor. Between 1854 and 1865, the building was used as a school. Today, the Red Brick has been completely refurbished, keeping the original wood trim and sills, rippling glass panes in deepest windows, original fireplaces and double broad chimneys. The Red Brick still echoes the dramatic period of history in which it thrived.
