Mr. Poffenberger was assistant postmaster in Polo for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian; a daughter, Gail Fricke, Manchester, Mo.; a son, Craig, Columbus, Ohio; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Brown-Seidel Funeral Home, with burial in Adeline Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. A memorial has been established.

Max W. Stuff

POLO -- Max W. Stuff, 55, of Rt. 3 here, died Saturday in Rockford Memorial Hospital after a three-month illness. He farmed in the Polo area all his life.

He was born near Polo, July 18, 1921, the son of John and Carrie (Rowland) Stuff. He was married to Norma Hammer, March 12, 1946, in Polo.

Stuff is survived by his widow; daughter Mrs. Steve (Kathy) Knutson of Peoria and sister, Mrs. Emerson (Vivian) Poffenberger of Polo.

A son preceded him in death.

Funeral was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at Brown-Seidel Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Holme, pastor of Polo United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery. A memorial has been established.

Norma R. Stuff, 99, of Polo, passed away July 12, 2019, at Polo. Norma was born January 21, 1920, in Polo, the daughter of George and Sadie (Zumdahl) Hammer. On March 11, 1946 in Polo she was united in marriage to Max Stuff (he preceded her in August 1977). Norma was a hairstylist for many years along with a loving and dedicated farmers wife. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, doing her own yard work, cooking and baking cookies for many. Norma continued to ride her bike around Polo till she was 95. She was preceded in death by son, Lance Stuff, sisters, Belva Hammer and Blanche Bloyer and brother, Maynard Hammer. Service at the Polo Family Funeral Home. Burial will be immediately following at Fairmount Cemetery also in Polo.

Eldon Edward Smith, son of John J. and Edith Orpha Hershey Smith, was born in Marion, S. D. on July 20, 1921 and died of a heart attack at his home Feb. 6, 1979. Funeral services were held in the Emmanuel United Presbyterian Church with August Ewert of the Bethel Mennonite Church officiating.

He was baptized in 1935 and became a member of the Emmanuel congregation, where he faithfully served as elder, Sunday school teacher, choir director and choir member.

He attended the University of Dubuque in Iowa, graduating in 1943. In World War II, he served as an ensign and lieutenant in the United States Navy. In 1947 he attended Columbia University, New York City, and in 1948 accepted a position in the Farmers State Bank of Marion, S. D. He served successively as assistant cashier, cashier and since 1954 as president. He was a member of Parker Masonic Lodge, Oriental Consistory, Yankton, and El Rian Shrine, Sioux Falls.

He was married on June 17, 1950 to Betty Jean Davidson in Akron, Ohio.

She survives along with six children, Addamaine Alison, Maura Milicent, Harlan Hershey, Eric Evan, Todd Theron and Barclay; a son-in-law, Daryl Thietje; a daughter-in-law, Carol May (Mrs. Harlan) Smith; two brothers, Keith of Marion and Gordon of Centerville, S. D.; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Caldwell of Union, Neb. and Mrs. Lois Reimer of Virginia, Minn.; and one grandchild.
