Birth date from Highland County, Ohio guardianship appointment record of Henry Surber, guardian of Simpson King, minor child of Milton King, dec'd, late of Illinois. Guardianship appointment dated 15 June 1857. Surety was William Lance (Highland County probate records, p.205)

In 1900, he put his birth year as 1849.1,2

He married Rachel Carrier, daughter of Alex Carrier and Nancy, on 29 January 1872 in Hamer Twp., Highland Co., OH,
