OBITUARY

Barbara E. Shalla, age 67, of Riverside, Iowa died Tuesday February 26, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a three month battle with cancer.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:30 pm Saturday March 1, 2008 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Julie Poulsen officiating. Visitation will begin noon Friday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 Friday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County or the Washington Public Library. Barb was born July 10, 1940 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Rees) Shannon. She graduated from Washington High School in 1958 and later graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Drake University in 1962. On June 2, 1962 Barb was united in marriage to Larry Shalla in Washington, Iowa.

Barb was a life resident of Washington, Iowa. She was a devoted wife and mother. In 1980 Barb started working at Washington Title and Guarantee which later became Day and Bordwell Abstracts. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Chapter J PEO, and was an active member of the Washington County Porkettes of which she was a founding member. Barb was a 4-H leader and served on the Washington Public Library Board. She enjoyed mushrooming, fishing, traveling and reading.

She is survived by her husband Larry Shalla of Riverside, Iowa; three daughters: Laurie Shalla of Redondo Beach, California; Beth Stuck and husband Steve of Des Moines, Iowa; Pam Newman and husband Don of Washington, Iowa; two granddaughters Meghan and Sarah Newman of Washington, Iowa and her mother-in-law Olive Shalla of Washington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law Dwane Shalla.

Services for Oral D. McCALL, 63, Springfield, Missouri, were held Monday, August 06, 1979, at the Crescent First Christian Church. The Rev. Dennis CLARK officiated and burial was in Oak View Cemetery, northwest of Crescent, under the direction of Abernathy Funeral Home. McCALL died at his home in Springfield Thursday, August 02, 1979. He was born January 15, 1916 at Lovell. He was a retired supervisor of the Frisco Transportation Co. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy. He was a member of University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield. He is a native of the Lovell community.

Mrs. Mary Pitsenbarger

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Pitsenbarger, mother of H.U. Jewett were held from the Morris funeral home, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev. E.W. Harrison conducted the service.

Rev. Harrison selected the scripture from which to make his address. The first verse of the ninetieth Psalm . Mrs. John Schwantes and Mrs. Owen Nisbet with Mrs. E.W. Harrison as accompanist provided the music. They sang "God Will Take Care of You", "Rock of Ages" and "Does Jesus Care."

Burial will be made in Union Cemetery. The pall bearers were: H.R. Wilson, Albert Brookshire, Perry Haney and Frank Wilkins.

Mary Waren was born near Indianapolis, Indiana, February 19, 1836. She moved to Iowa with her family when a young woman and in Jones county, February 25, 1858 she was married to Abel Jewett, who died during the Civil War. Three children were born to them, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Eye and Mrs. Ruth Tompkins having died several years ago, and one son, H.U. Jewett of this city with whom Mrs. Pitsenbarger had made her home for many years.

In 1870 she was married to Peter Pitsenbarger and two children were born of this union, both of whom died when quite young. Besides her son she is survived by nineteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. She was a member of the Dunkard church for many years. She died at the age of 91 years, ten months and two days.
