Note:

It was reported that Charles deserted the family and was in the Army during World War I. However, he would have been 46 in April, 1917 -- the Army had little interest in recruits of that age. There is no WWI draft registration record in ancestry.com's online database of draft registration records.

In the 1920 census Emma is listed as a widow. However, Charles may have actually abandoned the family. When Charles' father died (1925), his obituary said that Charles' whereabouts were unknown. Sometime before 1930, Emma remarried to John B. Wilkinson.[:CR].

Note:

Melody Money wrote:

Fred lived in Orleans, Indiana. He lived to his nineties, and we visited him several times. He was one of my favorite relatives--lots of personality. He would have lived longer, probably, but he was out hoeing corn on a really hot day and wouldn't quit. He had a heat stroke. He died some time after that but most people felt that it played a role in his death. Whether it did or not?
