James William Kirkendall
M, #756, b. 13 October 1806, d. 13 February 1848
Biography
James William Kirkendall was born on 13 October 1806 in Washington Co. (probably), PA,
; date based on headstone legend: "Died Feb. 13, 1848, aged 41 Yr. & 4 M."
Parents not yet identified. Leur Kuykendall (1706-1789), son of Cornelius and grandson of Leur (1686-1753) relocated from Minisink, Orange Co., NY to early Washington Co., PA. A reasonable guess would be that James was a great-grandson of this Leur Kuykendall, many of whose descendants are known to have used the "Kirkendall" spelling. For example, the 1786 Pennsylvania U.S. Septennial Census of 1786 listed the following in Washington County (Ancestry.com):
Dickinson Twp. - John Kirkendall
Peters Twp. - Henry, Benjamin, Lewis, Abram, and James Kirkendall
NOTE: Dickinson Township of the original Washington County was "struck off" in 1788 to become part of the new Allegheny County.
Also, a Nathaniel Kirkendall applied in 1787 for a land warrant in Washington County.

Catherine Gilmore, daughter of
John Gilmore and
Ann S. Brumfield, about 1830. James William Kirkendall married
Delilah Gilmore, daughter of
John Gilmore and

He was buried on 13 February 1848 in Luray Cemetery, Licking Co., OH, Findagrave #40727005.
Headstone still barely legible, is lying face up on the burial plot as of April, 1999 (seen and photographed by Donald L. Boyd). Buried next to first wife Catherine Gilmore and an infant (presumed to be Mary, b. 1832), who have identical style headstones, also still legible.
