James Wiley Anderson was born on 24 May 1833 in Pekin, Washington Co., IN. He married
Catherine M. Payne, daughter of
Lewis Payne and
Susannah Dawalt, on 9 November 1854 in Washington Co., IN. James Wiley Anderson died on 3 March 1929 in Washington Co., IN,
OBITUARY - The Salem Leader or Democrat; after March 03, 1929:
OLDEST RESIDENT OF COUNTY DIES
Again the Grim Reaper has visited our community and taken away one of the oldest citizens of the county, James Wiley Anderson passing away March 3, 1929. Had he lived until May he would have reached his ninety-sixth birthday.
He was the son of Linza and Zelphia Anderson, being the second child in a family of five sisters and three brothers.
He was born May 24, 1833 in Washington county, near Pekin, Ind. And there grew to manhood. With his parents he moved to the old home farm near Pekin and while living here he was married to Catherine M. Payne Nov. 24, 1854. With her he moved to the present home near South Boston, where he lived until his death, a period of about seventy years.
To this union were born four sons and one daughter, namely, Isaac L., Linza M. (deceased), William F., Amanda E. and James H. (deceased).
He also reared to manhood one nephew, Willard E. Weller.
On April 25, 1872 the wife and mother passed away, leaving him the care of the children.
He was married to Mary M. Beeson Nov. 12, 1873, and this union was broken by her death in May 1919.
He was a charter member of the Church of Christ at Cross Roads and served as elder from the time the church was organized until he became disabled by advanced age.
Few people are privileged to live the greatest number of years and witness the progress of country such as was he. Many hardships were encountered in the transition from the use of oxen and the horse-power threshing machine down to the present time. But thru it all he gained the respect and esteem of all who knew him.
Surely of him it can be truly said he has fought the good fight, he has finished the course, he has kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for him the crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge shall give to all.
“I shall know the loved who have gone before,
And joyfully sweet will be the meeting be
When over the river, the peaceful river,
The Angel of death shall carry me.”
“Dear is the spot where Christians sleep,
And sweet are the strains that angels pour,
O! Why should we in anguish weep?
They are not lost; but gone before.”
The funeral services were conducted by Evangelist Q. W. Scott at the home, Tuesday, March 5, 1929 and the remains were placed to rest in the Payne cemetery near South Boston.
He was buried in March 1929 in Anderson-Payne Cemetery, South Boston, Washington Co., IN.
