John Hiram Mullins, 76, of Belle passed away on January 14, 2008.

He was born November 5, 1931, in Charleston.

John served in the Korean War as a combat engineer, returning home as a highly decorated veteran. Following his combat tour, John entered the Army Reserves. He retired as a command sergeant major, epitomizing the Army's top enlisted leadership. Upon his retirement in 1987, his 35 years of military service and invaluable contributions earned him the highest peacetime military award, the Legion of Merit.

John also retired from E.I. DuPont with 28 years of service as an electrical supervisor in 1989.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lorene; son, John Mullins Jr. and wife, Martha, of Belle; daughters, Debbie Napier and husband, Dave, of Scott Depot, Candy Gessner and husband, Frank, of Greensboro, North Carolina, Dr. Vicki Dunn and husband, George, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Kathy Holcomb and husband, Carl, of Belle; and nine grandchildren, all of whom will miss and remember him with love, affection and respect.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 17, at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Glasgow.

His family and friends will gather for a visitation one-hour prior to the service in the mausoleum chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 336 Campbells Creek Drive, Charleston, WV 25306.

John Hiram Mullins began military service Korean War service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, followed by a career in the Army Reserves, retiring at the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

Thomas Allen Wendell, 84, of Shrewsbury, passed away Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.

He was retired from CSX Chessie System, where he worked in the track maintenance department, and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Hudnall Wendell; daughters, Vonna Dale and Nancy Buner; parents, Charles Andrew and Nellie Boggess Wendell; brother, Charles Wendell; and grandson, Bobby Barber Jr.

He is survived by his son, Marvin (Laura) Wendell of Belle; daughters, Donna (Randy) May of St. Albans and Peggy (Bobby) Barber of Powellton; two brothers; three sisters; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be noon Friday, Aug. 29, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, 600 Old Fort St., Cedar Grove, with the Rev. Joe Hubbard and the Rev. Donald Lanham officiating. Burial will follow the service at Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the funeral home.
