Marie was born in rural Louisiana. She spent several years in an orphanage in Natchez Mississippi after her father died. She married at age 13 to James A Pillow. She was widowed with 5 children when she married Chester W Hanson. She bore 2 additional children. They all moved to California at the end of the Great Depression. Marie was a champion arc welder at Ryan Aeronautics during World War II. She died much too soon - her two oldest sons were at war, her middle daughters were teenagers, and her youngest two children needed a mother's love.
