Biography

Mary A. was born in September 1832 in Missouri; father born North Carolina, mother born Tennessee.1 She married James Green Berry, Jr., son of James Green Berry and Permelia Green, on 10 July 1895 in Nickelton, Macon Co., MO; ceremony by Charles W. Yost, J.P. Mary A. died after 26 April 1910.

Note: Mary was first the wife of William A. McMillan. They are found in the censuses first in 1860 at Benton Twp., Knox County, Missouri, farming, with daughters Flora L., abt. 1855, Madora, abt. 1857, and Mariah I., abt. 1859. In 1870 they were listed at Hamburg Precinct, Calhoun County, Illinois, farming, with daughters Flora L., 14, Madora, 12, and Cora J. M., 10. In 1880, they were listed at Hurricane Twp., Lincoln County, Missouri, farming, with only a farm laborer lodging with them. In June, 1900, a "step-granddaughter" Jessie Dempsey, born 1883, was living with James and Mary Berry in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, indicating that at least one of Mary's daughters had married a Dempsey and had a least the one child, Jessie. However, I have been unable to discover the marriage of Mary to William McMillan (and thus her maiden name), or the fate of any of their daughters or the granddaughter Jessie Dempsey. DLB 2022.
