Shellsburg, April 8 Following a long illness from complications resulting from a paralytic stroke eight years, ago Ed Mullinex 67 years old died at 9:25 a.m. today at his home here. Funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Baptist church, the Rev. H. A. Esset presiding. Interment Oakwood cemetery.
Ed Mullinex was born in New York state March 9 1859. When six years old he came to Illinois with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mullinex. Fourteen years later he came to Benton County. He was married July 26, 1888 to Caroline Kale, who survives him. Eight years ago Mr. and Mrs. Mullinex retired to town from their farm in the vicinity. There is one son Glenn, a daughter Mrs. Anita Wilt both of Shellsburg and six grandchildren.
Other relatives living include five sisters and five brothers. A brother William lives at Walker and Dick and Dewitt Mullinex brothers reside here.

SHELLSBURG -- The betrothal of Miss Caroline Bernice Wilt and John J. Lieb is being announced by Miss Wilt's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilt of Shellsburg. Mr. Lieb, who is in the army air corps at Douglas, Ga., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lieb of Atkins.
Miss Wilt is a graduate of the Shellsburg high school and Mr. Lieb was graduated from high school in Atkins. He received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Iowa State college.

Vinton—Alfred C. Gustafson, age 93, died peacefully Sunday, July 17, 2011, at the Keystone Nursing Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Daubs officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
Alfred Carl Gustafson was born December 14, 1917 near Anamosa, IA, to Emil and Eva (Blood) Gustafson. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. In 1942, Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
In 1947 Alfred married Charlene Wilt in Shellsburg, IA. They later divorced. Alfred farmed between Urbana and Shellsburg for a time before moving to Vinton. Alfred owned a Coast to Coast Hardware store in Waterloo, WI and later in Watertown, WI before moving back to Vinton to retire. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce and the Baptist Church. He was an avid reader and stamp collector and enjoyed riding bicycles until well into his eighties.
Alfred is survived by his sons, Gary (Barbara), Vinton, IA, David, Kuna ID, and Alan (Leane) Gustafson, Lakefield, MN, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul, and sisters, Dorothy Jean and Mary.
A memorial fund has been established.

Wayne B. Wilson, 92 of Independence died May 11 at Buchanan County Health Center.
He was born Feb 15, 1925 near Garrison, son of William B. and Matilda (Hanson) Wilson. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1942. In 1945, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years primarily in the Philippines and Korea. On Aug 17, 1964 he married Charlene Wilt Gustafson in Valentine, NE. She died Sept 6, 2010. He married Betty Jean Greenwood on Oct 15, 2011.
In 1972, he purchased a farm east of Independence and farmed until he retired in 1991. He was a member of the First United Church of Independence.
Survivors: his wife, seven stepsons, Gary (Barbara) Gustafson of Vinton, Davis Gustafson of Kuna, IN (sic), Alan (Leane Gustafson of Lakefield, MN, Steven (Pamela) Greenwood of Viroqua, WI, David (Sherrie) Greenwood of Rowley, and Eric (Tonya) Greenwood of Rowley, four stepdaughters, Rebecca (Richard) Kimmerle of Chino Valley, AZ, Barbara (John) Fishels of Independence, Melissa (thomas) Franck of Rio Hondo, TX and Jennifer (Phillip) AmAtee of Jesup and many grandchildren and a sister Lois Stueck of Grimes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Marvel Fett, a brother Warren, a son Kevin and a stepdaughter Susan (Greenwood) Stelter.
Services May 16 at First United Methodist Church in Independence with burial in Mt Hope Cemetery where a military service bagins at 7 p.m.
NOTE: The Gustafson brothers were Kevin's half-brothers, not step-brothers.

He was born on Feb. 20, 1966, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Wayne Burton and Florence Charlene (Wilt) Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a graduate of River Hills School in Cedar Falls. He was employed as a greeter at Wal-Mart and he also performed janitorial services at Long John Silvers in Waterloo. He liked to watch sports on TV (especially the Iowa Hawkeyes) and he was a country music fan. He especially enjoyed vacationing in Branson, Mo. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence where enjoyed attending worship and helping the ushers.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlene Wilson.

EVANSDALE -- Robert W. “Bob” Wilson, 77, of Evansdale, died Saturday, April 25, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.
He was born Nov. 6, 1937, in Waterloo, son of Fred and Agnes Sauer Wilson. He married Donnetta Wilt on Dec. 6, 1958, in Waterloo; she died in 1995. He then married Arlene Laughead on Jan. 28, 2001, in Florida.
A graduate of Rogue River High School, Rogue River, Ore., Bob was employed by John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 34 years, retiring in 1993.
