Newspaper article -- Waterloo Daily Courier, Waterloo, Iowa, 23 Oct 1950:
Benton Resident Escapes Serious Injury in Upset
Vinton, Ia. -- Dale Cantonwine, 21, resident of the country southeast of Vinton, escaped serious injury Saturday night when he lost control of his car as he rounded a corner between the Mud Creek bridge and Harold Miller farm and the car crashed in the ditch.
Cantonwine was unconscious when picked up by passerby and taken to the Vinton hospital. An examination revealed that he was suffering from shock and bruises. Later he was able to return to his home. Damage to his 1946 Ford was estimated at around $400.
Young Cantonwine had left his wife and baby here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Primmer, and was returning to the Cantonwine farm.
He said a car ahead stirred up so much dust that he was unable to see the road ahead. During the summer he worked here with his father-in-law but is now employed in Cedar Rapids.

New bell ring in an old treat for folks in Tipton
TIPTON -- "Ding, ding, ding, ding"
In the distance, a bell rings, a bell that sounds new and distinctive to kids and nostalgic to their parents. The kids may not know what it is, but the parents can already feel the tingling coldness of a fudgesicle on their tongues.
Mmmmmmmmm! It makes you wonder. How many sandlot baseball games, hid-'n'-seek games and just plain afternoons running around the yard have been interrupted, at least temporarily, by the clanging of the ice cream man's bell?
Millions, maybe billions. But sadly it's not like that any more. Unless you happen live in Tipton.
There Wendy Daedlow and her mother, Pat Cantonwine, have brought back a scoop of youth that melted away a quarter of a century ago in Tipton.
Their pedal bicycle, its large hatches high above the ground so kids can't reach inside, rolls along the streets every afternoon. The bells ring. And when it pulls up to the curb, Wendy digs out a Spacesicle, a snow cone, a Blockbuster, a .... She collects 50 cents for each and the customers unwrap the treat and enjoy.
I ask for a dreamsicle. The orange, creamy bar was always my favorite.
Sorry, Wendy explains. She used to sell Dreamsicles, but they didn't sell well. Even as the cheapest item in the cart at 30 cents, people didn't buy it.
"The more expensive items sell the best," she says. "I do not know why."
Maybe it's because people think the more they pay, the more ice cream they get. After all, when your stomach screams for ice cream you want all the ice cream possible. I mean, just think about it a minute, If there is one summer dream every kid in America has, it must be to own an ice cream wagon with an endless supply of ice cream.
That's not really why Wendy and her mom got into the business. They thought it would be nice to make some extra money. They also thought kids in town would like to hear the ice cream man's bells. And eat they Ice cream
It turns out that adults like it just as much. Almost half the customers are adults, especially people during the afternoon on work breaks.
I had a Blockbuster -- a red and white popsicle with ice cream in the middle. Delicious.
Staying away from these ice cream bars could be tough. Wendy's husband, Chris, who rides the bike in the evenings, grabs one every once in a while. And Wendy sometimes eats as many as four in one day.
"But I pay for them," she adds quickly. "Otherwise, with six people in the family, we would eat up all the profits.
"I even make my own children pay for it. They have to do their chores," Wendy says. "I even have some kid's who say "We can get it free because we're friends of Chad.' But it doesn't work that way,"
Wendy and Chris's children --- Chad, 8 Toni, 7, Erica, 6, and Jodi, 3 -- love the new business. They’d help but they're too young now. Instead, they stay with grandma (Pat) while Wendy loads ice cream for her 2 p.m. sales stop at the Cedar County Shop. By 3 p.m. Wendy stops at Tipton Electric and then heads for Pat's home.
Chris soon returns from the Quad Cities where he is an engineer for Caterpillar, and, after supper, prepares to head out again. Often he stops at softball games and sets up shop. The hours can be long and sometimes boring, he admits. But his bosses make him keep trying to sell the ice cream.
"I tell you, if you think it's bad working for a regular boss, you should try working for these two," Chris says, grinning.
Wendy and Pat laugh.
Chris admits the single speed bike has given him stronger legs, led to a little needed weight loss and allowed him to get a deeper tan. It's also not too bad making a little extra money.
The Daedlows have a lease agreement with Dixie Dee ice cream company of the Quad Cities. They sell about 150 ice cream items a week. One big week, however, Chris sold $373 worth and was listed in the Dixie Dee newsletter as one of the top salesmen of the week.
So far this summer Wendy, Pat and Chris are pretty satisfied with the results. They plan to ride the bike at least through Labor Day and then tally up the expenses and profits.
If they come out ahead, they plan to be back next year. In fact there is a chance they may try to get another bike for Tipton, or some other nearby community. And maybe another one. And another.
And who knows, in a few years, the ice cream man's bell could become familiar to kids once again.
