Killed By Car Falling From Lift
-------------
A Hanover graduate student at the University of Delaware, Newark, was killed yesterday when his small automobile apparently fell from a lift on top of him on the U.S. Coast Guard dock on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, near Lewes, Del.
The victim, Earl Samuel Fitz Jr., 31, was found pinned beneath the vehicle by a passing fisherman and was taken to Beebe Hospital, Lewes, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Physicians said he suffered a crushed chest.
Fitz, whose parents live at 312 Broadway, was studying for his Doctor of Philosophy degree at the university. He was engaged in research work at the university’s marine laboratories and was to have become a member of the university faculty this fall. He visited his home here last weekend.
The Hanover student was deeply interested in marine life and gave numerous lectures on the subject before college students in eastern states.
Fitz graduated from Richelberger Senior High School in the class of 1943. A World War II veteran, he served with the Seebees in Alaska from 1943 to 1945 and later studied for two years at the Presbyterian College, Clinton, S. C.? ? Fitz was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree at Drake University in 1950 and received his master's degree at the University of Delaware last June.
He was a member of the Phi Sigma Pi fraternity at Drake University and belonged to Emmanuel Reformed Church, Broadway.
Surviving are his parents, Earl S. and Virginia W, Lewis Fitz, and three sisters, Mrs. Roy C. Bixby, 21 West Chestnut Street; Caroline Moul Fitz, Valley Stream. N. Y., and Mr. J. R. Lesley, Schuylkill Haven R. D. 2.

Rev. Dr. Nevin E. Smith, pastor of Emmanuel Reformed church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
The accident happened at the Coast Guard dock, Lewes-Rehoboth canal, near Lewes, Del. Mr. Fitz, who served in the Seabees during World War II, was studying for his doctor of philosophy degree at the University of Delaware, Newark, and had planned to become a member of the university faculty this fall.
He was a member of Emmanuel Reformed church and was affiliated with Phi?Sigma Phi (sic) fraternity of Drake University.
Note (Catherine Cook): I believe the fraternity named above is in error - it wasn't founded until 1988 in Indiana; also there is confusion as to what doctorate he was seeking. I tend to believe it was in Marine Biology.

He Wants A Divorce
From the Baltimore Sun, Feb. 20.
Mrs. Sarah E. Franklin, who was married December 19, 1878, and is the mother of eight children, preferred the excitement of a women's lodge to the comforts of home, according to a bill for absolute divorce filed in Circuit Court No. 2 yesterday by her husband, Chas. S. Franklin, through John H. Grill, attorney.
The direful results that followed when Mrs. Franklin joined the lodge are graphically set forth in the bill of complaint, which is unique, as Mr. Franklin tells of his troubles in the first person. The following is part of the complaint:
"Up to a period of about three or four years prior to their separation his wife was all a good and faithful wife should be to her husband, when, alas for me! she joined a women's lodge, and then my pleasure was at an end, and she would go to the meeting of the said lodge against my wish and consent, would come home at any and all unseemly hours, would visit adjacent cities on lodge business, so I was informed, and I and my home were neglected. This state of affairs continued until I could bear the same no longer and after I protested in vain I was told that before the defendant would withdraw from the woman's lodge I could leave home, which I did."
Then Mr. Franklin charges his wife with unfaithfulness.
Mr. and Mrs. Franklin were married in Carroll county, Maryland, and separated December 6., 1903, when, he alleges, he was compelled to leave his wife because of her misconduct. Seven of their eight children survive -- two sons, aged respectively 24 and 22 years, and five daughters, aged respectively 21, 19, 17, 15 and 12 years. Mr. Franklin asks the custody of the minor children.

HE GETS NO DIVORCE
Charles S. Franklin Said Wife Preferred Lodge To Home.
FAILED TO PROSECUTE CASE
Complaint is Dismissed Under Rule Of Court Because The Proceeding Was Not Followed Up.
Judge Harlan signed an order yesterday, as of Circuit Court? ? No. 2, dismissing the bill of complaint of Charles S. Franklin against Sarah E. Franklin for an absolute [de]vorce, which was filed February 19 last and charged unfaithfulness. An answer filed by Mrs. Franklin February 24 denied the charge. Under a rule of the court the bill was dismissed because the plaintiff failed to continue the proceedings in the case. They were married in December, 1878, and have seven children living.
In his bill applying for a divorce, Mr. Franklin alleged that his troubles started about four years ago when his wife joined a women's lodge. Continuing, he said in the bill: "She would go to the meeting of said lodge against his wish and consent, would come home at any and all unseeingly hours, and would visit adjacent cities on lodge business, so he was told, and he and his home were neglected. After he protested in vain, he was told that before the defendant would withdraw from the woman's lodge he could leave their home, which he did." John
H. Grill was attorney for the plaintiff and Harry E. Scherf for the defendant.

Per Tracy Devault:
John Franklin, age 4 months, listed in the 1860 Census and "Abdail" Franklin, age 11, listed in he 1870 Census, appear to be the same person. Abdiel is mentioned in the will of his father (1874). One genealogy says he went by Thomas Albert Franklin. There does not seem to be any record of John Abdiel Franklin after he is mentioned in his father's will.

WILT
Mrs. David E. Stem, of Sam's Creek, this county, received a telegram on Wednesday last announcing the death of her brother, George W. Wilt of near Shellsburg, Iowa. Although the deceased was 82 years old, yet the sad news was quite a shock to his relations and friends in this county, as he visited here last fall for about a month and at that time was enjoying good health. His death leaves Mrs. Stem as the only surviving member of the Wilt family, which was a large one. The deceased was formerly a resident of this county, living near Jewsburg, now Marston, having left here 34 years ago for Iowa. During these years he was a constant subscriber to the Advocate.
OBITUARY - Vinton Eagle; January 17, 1908 (Ancestry.com):

Obituary -- The Gazette; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Friday, February 9, 1945; Page 11 (Newspaper.com):
92-Year-Old Center Point Woman Dies
Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Dye, 92, who as a child was behind the lines at the battle of Gettysburg, which was fought near her childhood home in Maryland, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. James Van Fossen, in Center Point at 2:10 a.m. Friday after an extended illness. She was Center Point's oldest resident.
Mrs. Dye, to whom war was an old story, having seen American boys march off to four conflicts, recalled how her mother used to feed passing Civil war soldiers fresh bread, piping hot, from the oven, and how southern soldiers waited not to be served, but pillaged their home for food.
Born at Hanover, Penn., Aug. 12, 1852, Mrs. Dye moved to Shellsburg at the age of 18 and in 1881 was married to Plimpton Dye. Several years later they moved to Center Point, where her son, William, was born. He fought in the Spanish-American war.
Another son, Clifford was killed in France in 1918, and the Center Point Legion post is name for him. Two grandsons, Carl and Orville Dye of Center Point are fighting in this war.
Her husband and two sons having preceded her in death. Mrs. Dye is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Van Fossen and Mrs. John Baumgartner, and a son, William M. Dye, all of Center Point; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Christian church of Center Point and the American Legion auxillary, and she was a Gold Star mother.
The body will be taken from the Beatty chapel in Cedar Rapids to Center Point, where services will be held at the Christian church at a time to be announced later.

Article -- The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa); Tuesday, 22 Aug 1944; Page 8; (Newspapers.com):
She's Seen 4 Wars Go By
Special to The Gazette,
CENTER POINT -- War is an old, repeated story for Mrs. Catherine Dye, 92, who has seen American youth march off to fight in four of the nation's conflicts.
She still recalls the eventful battle of Gettysburg, fought near her childhood home in Maryland. She remembers how her mother used to feed the passing soldiers fresh bread, piping hot from the oven; how other soldiers from the South waited not to be served but pillaged their home for food.
But her memories of the Civil war are but a little girl's dreams -- wistful, nebulous and far away. And for that reason she cherishes a small red book autographed by Walter B. Thomas, a Northern officer, which he gave her, a child of 12, as he marched by.
Lived in Shellsburg
Moving to Shellsburg at the age of 18, she was married in 1881 to Plimpton Dye. They lived in that locality for many years before coming to Center Point.
It was while there that her son, William, was born and by the time he had grown to manhood war again came to the United States. Her boy was sent overseas to fight in the Spanish American war -- a thing unheard of at that date. The methods of communication were so remote that Mrs. Dye knew nothing of her son's whereabouts for months at a time. But soon it was over and William returned unhurt.
Then came World War I. By that time another son was ready to fight for his country. Clifford this time went overseas. He was killed in France in 1918, and in his honor the Center Point American Legion post was named.
That was the war to end wars, and Mrs. Dye hoped it would be so. But as her grandchildren grew up, another war grew upon the people of the world. Carl and Orville Dye, her grandsons who live just across the street, went off to fight. And she was proud of them.
No, war is nothing new to Mrs. Dye.

In observance of her ninety-second birthday the local chapter of the American Legion auxiliary entertained at a party in her home, and a large cake bearing the letters "Our Gold Star Mother" was presented her.
