Lois Belle Abernathy Moubry, 82, died Thursday, July 25, 1996, in her home after a lengthy illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, First Christian Church, by the Revs. David Gates and Warren Johnson. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m.. Sunday at Overton Family Funeral Home, Vinton.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold; two sons, Gary and wife Karen of Vinton and Rex and wife Sherry of Downs, Kan.; three daughters, Marlene Gilbert and husband Howard of Seattle, Sherrie Anderson and husband Richard of Independence and Penny Witt and husband Larold of Shueyville; a brother, Jim Abernathy and wife Virginia of Traer; a sister, Luella Studebaker of Independence; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great- grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Esther; and three brothers, Cliff, Guy and Dale.

Lois Belle Moubry was born July 5, 1914, in Vinton, the daughter of Charles "Ed" and Florence Mae Primmer Abernathy. She was raised and received her education in Vinton, graduating with the class of 1932. On Nov. 24, 1934, Lois eloped with Arnold Moubry to Galena, Ill., to be married. They then made their home in and around Vinton for most of their married life. Lois was employed as a cook at the Tilford Junior high before her retirement. During her life, Lois greatly enjoyed her family and spent time growing roses, crocheting and cooking. She was also a godsend and guardian for her niece Lorena Harting by helping her during her childhood. Lois was surrounded by her family and had the aid of Hospice in her last hours. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed by many people.

A memorial fund has been established.

Gary was born Aug. 21, 1935, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Lois Abernathy Moubry. He was a 1955 graduate of Washington High School in Vinton. On April 9, 1960, Gary was united in marriage with Karen K. Powers at First Christian Church in Vinton.

Gary delivered ice cream for Sanitary Dairy in Cedar Rapids before becoming a heavy equipment operator for B.L. Anderson, Vulcan and Wendling Quarries. He retired from Wendling Quarries in 2000.

Gary was a very active member of First Christian Church in Vinton. He sang in the choir, was chairman of the board of trustees; was a member of the Diaconate, delivered Christmas plates, acted as a greeter and belonged to POWWOW, the Wednesday night Bible study group, for 12 years.

Gary loved fishing, hunting, camping and gardening, plus canning and freezing his garden harvests. His greatest joy in life was spending time with and helping his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Hazel and George Powers; and brother-in-law, Howard Gilbert.



He was buried in May 2015 in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, Benton Co., IA, Findagrave #146108123.

George L. Powers, 63, of Vinton died Wednesday, May 16, 1979, of an apparent heart attack at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Powers was born June 1, 1915, in Staples, Minn, to Lester and Mary Ludden Powers. He was married Oct 2, 1934 in Vinton to Hazel Spicher.

Survivors include his wife, a son, Larry Powers of Dysart; a daughter, Karen (Mrs Gary Moubry) of Vinton, a sister, Marilyn (Mrs Max Ferguson) of Vinton and three brothers, John of Cedar Rapids, Bert of Waterloo, and Robert of Omaha, Neb.

He is also survived by four grandchildren Powers was a retired owner and manager of the grocery business. He belonged to the First Christian Church of Vinton and the Izaak Walton League of Vinton. He was also a veteran of World War II and belonged to the George G. Lucky Post No. 57 of the American Legion, Vinton.

The funeral will take place at the First Christian Church of Vinton on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Rev Fred Banda will officiate and burial will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery.
