Area Woman Killed Near North Liberty
A rural Iowa City mother died in an automobile accident late Wednesday when her car left a county road near North Liberty and struck a tree.
Mrs. Darlene C. Humpal, 28, of Route 1 was thrown out of her car and killed after it went through a “T” intersection 1½ miles west of Young’s Corner, near the old Madison Township school.
Highway Patrol officers who investigated the accident said Mrs. Humpal was headed north, apparently on her way home, when she lost control of her car. The accident occurred about 11:15 p.m.
Three persons have died in traffic accidents in Johnson County this year compared with one death at this time a year ago. Mrs. Humpal’s death was the 123rd in Iowa traffic accidents this year, four less than a year ago.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the George I. Gay-Oathout Funeral Home. The Rev. Raymond M. Hudson will officiate and burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery at North Liberty. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 7 p.m. today.
Mrs. Humpal was born in Johnson County on Oct. 2, 1938, the daughter of Reuben and Mabel Williamson Stoner. She was married to Stanley Humpal on June 20, 1959, in Des Moines and they had a son, Terry James, and a daughter, Debra Rae.
A lifetime resident of Johnson County, Mrs. Humpal graduated from Iowa City High School. She was cafe manager at Randall’s Super Valu store in Coralville.
