PONTOTOC - Leola "Lee" Yancey Dowdy, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was a Christian, a retired beautician and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, where she held several offices at the local, district and state level, and was awarded several accommodations and awards.

Burial in the Ecru Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Layne Dowdy of Pontotoc; her four daughters, Debbie Spencer (Phillip) of Thaxton, Vicki Cormier (Paul) of Tupelo, Renee Hopkins of Newton, Mass., and Wanda McClure of Arlington, Texas; two sons, Darryl Hopkins (Kim) of Tupelo and Steve Dowdy (Sandy) of Florida; two sisters, Elsie Huddleston of Lake City, Fla., and Marilyn Harrell of Falkner; two brothers, Fagin Yancey of Germantown, Tenn., and Willie Yancey of Pickwick, Tenn.; her sister-in-law, Jo Yancey of Ponce Inlet, Fla; her friends, James and Dorothy McCord of Pontotoc; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Yancey and Overa Wilbanks Yancey; her stepmothers, Wardie Yancey and Gertrude Yancey; the fathers of her children, Donald Ray Bigham and Wayne "Hoppy" Hopkins; her sister, Dolly Murphy; and her brother, Jim Yancey.
