Grace Sells Jenkins, age 101, of Gray, TN went to be with the Lord Monday, October 7, 2019 at NHC Healthcare. Grace was born in Washington County, TN, September 27, 1918, to the late Emory and Pearl Keefauver Sells.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, George W. Jenkins, a son, Rick Jenkins, two brothers, Russell P. Sells and John W. Sells, and a sister, Ruth Sells Hale.

Grace was a lifelong resident of the Gray community and had been an active member of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church since 1935 where she was affectionately known as “Amazing Grace.”

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Steve Smith, of Gray; a sister, Evelyn Sells Ferguson, also of Gray; and a brother, Allen Sells and his wife, Betty, of Greeneville; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, her loving church family and many friends and neighbors.

A celebration of Grace’s life will be held Friday, October 11, 2019, at 2:00 PM at Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church, 197 Suncrest Street, Gray, TN with Dr. John Stevens and Dr. Gene Lasley officiating. The family will greet friends from 12:00 pm until time of service. A graveside service will immediately follow at Sulphur Springs Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bob Edwards, Mark Larkey, Jerry Lovegrove, Bert Martin, Larry Russell and Larry Trent. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, great nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, 197 Suncrest Street, Gray, TN 37615 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mildred Hale

Mildred Ruth Hale, 85, 876 Suncrest Drr., Gray, died at her residence on Monday, April 9, 2007, under the care of her family, friends and Hospice.

She was born in Kingsport on May 31, 1921, to the late Emory and Pearl Keefauver Sells. She lived most of her life in Gray. Ruth was a homemaker and helped her late husband in his business at the C.E. Hale Jewelry store in downtown Johnson City. She loved making ceramics, fishing and tending to her flowers.

She was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star Grand View #411 and a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Nolichuckey Grand View #194. She was a Christian and of the Methodist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. Hale, in 1978; one brother, Russell P. Sells, of Kingsport.

She is survived by her son, Roger Hale, and wife, Margie, of Gray, one granddaughter, Kim Phipps and husband, Kerry; one great-granddaughter, MaKayla Phipps, all of Watauga; two sisters, Grace Jenkins, Evelyn Ferguson, both of Gray; two brothers, John W. Sells, of Gray, Allen Sells and wife, Betty, of Milton, WV; sisters-in-law, Opal Sells, of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Irene Ford and Terena Norris for their loving care in the past several months and to the Adventa Hospice Services for their kindness. The family will be receiving friends Wednesday evening from 6-8:30 p.m., with services to be held at 8:30 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Gene Lasley officiating.

Pallbearers will be Rick Jenkins, Phil Sells, Danny Sells, Emory Sells, Ricky Sells, Mary Ferguson, Matthew Ferguson, Chris Sells, Allen Sells II, Kerry Phipps

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.

Gray Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Hale.

John W. "J.W." Sells - GRAY

John W. Sells, age 86, 605 Old Stage Rd., Gray, passed away early Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, 2008, with family by his side in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

He was born in Sullivan County, TN, and was a son of the late William Emory and Pearl Keefauver Sells. Mr. Sells was a Christian and he attended Fountain of Life Bible Church. He was a member of the Boones Creek Ruritan and a past member of Gray Community Chest.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Southern Philippines 1942-1946 and in Germany 1951-1952. Mr. Sells retired from Eastman Kodak after 44 years of service in the Power and Services Division.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Russell P. Sells, of Kingsport; one sister, Ruth S. Hale of Gray.

Survivors include one daughter, Penny Sells Treadway, of Johnson City; one son, Chris Sells, of Gray; one granddaughter, Heather Olivia McRath, of Johnson City; one great-granddaughter, Tameira Faith McRath, of Johnson City; one brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Betty Sells, of Milton, W.VA.; two sisters, Grace S. Jenkins and Evelyn S. Ferguson, both of Gray; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel and any other time at the home of a sister, Evelyn Ferguson, 150 Suncrest St., Gray. Funeral services for Mr. Sells will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Vic Young and Dr. Gene Lasley officiating.

Pallbearers will be Cecil Rutledge, Scott Buckingham, Danny McClellan, Phil Sells, Phil Wheelock, Emory Sells and Leland Hamilton. Honorary pallbearers are his nephews.

Military graveside services will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Monte Vista Burial Park. Anyone wishing to go in procession is asked to meet at the funeral home by 11:15 Saturday.
