MRS. RICHARD J. SALERNO
CLYDE, May 14 -- Mrs. Joanne Collins Salerno, 46, a resident of Waterloo RD 3, Oak View Manor, died in Waterloo Hospital Monday night (May 12, 1958) after suffering a brain hemorrhage a week earlier.
She was born in Fresno, Calif. a daughter of Henry and Ethel Collins.
She leaves her husband, Richard G. Salerno, and a daughter, Mrs. William Baker of Waterloo.
Funeral will be held in the John F. Salerno home in Clyde on Friday at 9 a.m. and in Saint John's Catholic Church at Clyde at 9:30 a.m. Burial in Saint John's Cemetery, Clyde. Funeral arrangements are by Harold S. Mann Funeral Home in Clyde.
Note: Joanne's 1933 marriage record to John Randolph Ferris Sr. lists her parents as Fred Collins and Martha White. The above obituary says her parents were Henry Collins and Ethel. No documentary evidence has been found to confirm either version of her parents. A grandson reported that his mother was told by Joanne that she (Joanne) had been adopted.
Information from Tracy Devault:
Joanne Dee Collins married John Randolph Ferris, Sr. (1907-1979) on 12 April 1933 at San Pedro, Los Angeles County, California. Exactly seven months later, on 12 Nov 1933, the couple's son, John Randolph Ferris, Jr., was born. In 2019, analysis of the DNA test results (Family Tree Y-DNA and Ancestry.com autosomal DNA) that were obtained by John Randolph Ferris Jr.'s grandson (William Joseph Ferris-Craig) indicate that John R. Ferris Jr. was actually the biological son of Francis Everett Davalt. Both Francis and Joanne were living in San Pedro when she became pregnant. It appears that none of the people involved knew that Francis was the biological father of John Jr.
The San Pedro City Directory shows that John Randolph Ferris, Sr. and Joanne Dee Collins were still living together as of 1934. In the 1940 Census, John Jr. was living with his father and a step mother named "Gladas" (Gladys) in Anne Arundel Co., MD. John Randolph Ferris, Sr. was buried next to his last wife, Catherine Genevieve (Leer) Ferris, at Riverside National Cemetery.
In early 2024, additional research revealed that Joanne Dee (Collins, Ferris) left John Sr. after 1934, and lived with Charles Harold Dresser (1914-1993) in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA. On 21 DEC 1936 their daughter, Marcia Joanne Dresser (1936-2003), was born. About seven months after Marcia's birth, Charles and Joanne were married in Pierce County, WA on 22 JUL 1937. They were still together and living in Inglewood, CA as of the APR 1940 federal census. Charles was originally from Seneca County, NY and they apparently relocated to Geneva, New York shortly after 1940. Charles and Joanne separated at some time thereafter. Charles remarried once or twice. He died 13 APR 1993 at Ashland City, Cheatham Co., TN.
Joanne was remarried to Michael Riccione (1924-1981) by APR 1950 when they were listed in the federal census at Trenton, NJ. She remarried the final time to Richard Gilbert Salerno (1922-1984) in 1953. She died in 1958, and she and Richard are buried together in St. John's cemetery, Clyde, Wayne Co., NY.
Marcia Joanne Dresser married Edward N. Barrett (1933-2010) on 5 JUL 1952 at Geneva, NY, when she was fifteen and a half years old. She had two daughters with Edward, then left the girls with him and remarried to Charles William Baker on 24 MAR 1956 at Varick, Seneca County, NY. She had two sons with Charles, one of whom is Dale Baker. She went on to remarry Virgil V. Garcia in 1970, Brooks Co., TX, then Jerald Wayne Weins in 1974, Cameron Co., TX and finally Robert Earl Wildt in 1977, Cameron Co., TX. Edward N. Barrett remarried to Barbara Ann Pietrowski (1939-2021) on 10 JUN 1961.
Marcia's son, Dale Baker, had his autosomal DNA tested by Ancestry.com. Dale's test is listed as a match with William Joseph Ferris-Craig, indicating a half-first cousin once removed relationship.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
[American College of Surgeons Bulletin, Apr. 1970]
Dr. Hilger Perry Jenkins probably had more to do with the success of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Medical Motion Picture program than any other person. He was born in 1902, the son of an architectural designer, which some believe brought an innate artistic ability to his ingenious methods of teaching. Dr. Jenkins was known not only as a highly creative personality, but also as a humble and modest person.
Dr. Jenkins graduated from the University of Chicago with a BS degree in 1923 and from Rush Medical College with an MD in 1927. After completing a surgical internship at Presbyterian Hospital, he joined Dallas Phemister, MD, FACS, at the University of Chicago, becoming the first surgical resident at the new Billings Hospital. He stayed on the faculty of the department of surgery at the University of Chicago until 1946, when he became chief of surgery at Woodlawn Hospital and clinical professor of surgery at the University of Illinois. He was highly regarded for his outstanding services as a plastic and general surgeon, and for his contributions to surgical education, and returned to the University of Chicago in 1960 as professor of surgery.
Dr. Jenkins became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 1934 and served as an ACS Governor from 1952 to 1958. Throughout his storied career, he maintained an avid interest in the use of audio-visual materials in surgical education, and served as the Chair of the ACS Committee on Medical Motion Pictures from 1951-1966. He originated the program “Spectacular Problems in Surgery” for the ACS annual Clinical Congresses.
For his unique contribution to ACS and outstanding contribution to the organization and production of the Cine Clinics, the College’s motion picture program produced especially for the Clinical Congress, he received the College’s Distinguished Service Award in 1959, the College’s highest honor. Computer-generated video-based education programs for Fellows stand directly on the shoulders of Dr. Jenkins and his vision, and what he was able to accomplish.
In 1967 he received the prestigious McClintock Award at the University of Chicago before an audience giving him a standing ovation, an award not generally given to a man of his young age. He served as President of many surgical associations and an emeritus professor at the University of Chicago where he gave an AV presentation on pelvic conditions to the Chicago Medical Society, only two days before his untimely death on January 17, 1970.
Dr. Jenkins leaves a rich heritage of outstanding teaching films and scientific publications. Many of his notes on the production of his own films, as well as the records of the Committee on Medical Motion Pictures, can be found in the ACS Archives.
