2nd Lt. U.S. Army Air Corps, World War II-Lt. Shirer was lost in action during the American Campaign Theater of Operations on 1-18-1943 while serving as a Co-Pilot on a B-24G Aircraft in the Alaskan Frontier while flying with the 21st Bomber Squadron of the 30th Bomber Group. He and eight other crew members were stationed at March Air Base in California, and they were patroling up and down the West Coast.
He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Benjamin F. Shirer of 409 Laura Avenue in Peoria, Illinois, and is a 1935 graduate of Peoria H.S., and he was married at the time that he went missing.
He received his Commission and Wings at Kelly Field, Texas on December 18, 1941.
Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Pilot Wings, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal.
Footnote: His father, Ben, was first cousin to the great writer and news Analyst, William L. Shirer, "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".
Memo: The other crew members, Lt. Linton D. Hamilton, Pilot, Lt. Bill Carpenter, TSgt. John B. Byars, SSgt. Edward Beavers, Sgt. Milton Kalter, SSgt. Ranford R. Patterson, SSgt. Carl B. Reigh, and SSgt. Roger P. Vance. Also, Lt Hamilton' wife, Lois, was killed on the same plane that had the Actress, Miss Carole Lombard in 1942.
He was buried in Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Honolulu Co., HI, Findagrave #56122259.

Word of the death of Mrs. Lois Gerling Nothacker, well-known among the younger set of Rochester, in Alameda, Calif., was received here yesterday. A graduate of Livingston Park Seminary, she was a member of the original Eastman Theater ballet.
Mrs. Nothacker, granddaughter of the late Jacob Gerling, continued her theatrical career in New York and later traveled with the San Carlo Opera Company and the Philadelphia Civic Opera Company.
She leaves her husband, Wilbur F. Nothacker; two sons, Frederick Nothacker and an infant son; her father, Fred C. Gerling; four sisters, Jean, Phyllis, Jacquelyn and Gwendolyn, all of Alameda, and a number of relatives in Rochester.

Gordon Calvin Wagner, 89, died Friday, August 22 at Unity Point Health Allen Hospital.
He was born December 11, 1924 in Waterloo, son of H. Truman and Viola Miller Wagner. He married Donna Anderson in 1956 and they were later divorced. He then married Elaine E. Pippert Arbuckle on August 30, 1975 in Waterloo. She died January 10, 2008.
Gordon graduated from West High School in 1942. He then graduated from Drake University with a degree in pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist at Miller Drug for over fifty years, retiring in 1992.
He is survived by two sons, Bill M. (fiancé Lori Olson) Wagner of Owatonna, Minn. and Dale D. Arbuckle of Albany, Ore.; five daughters, Lynette K. (Jeff) Hinkle of Marshalltown, DeAnn Waniorek of Waterloo, Ramona Lee Hamilton of Tupelo, Miss., Kathy (Jeff) Gors of Waterloo and Debbie S. Arbuckle of Waterloo; fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Wagner of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven Arbuckle; a sister-in-law, Rita Wagner and two dogs, Samantha and Destiny.
There will be a Celebration of Life visitation on Wednesday, August 27 from 4-7 p.m. at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. A family burial will be Thursday at Waterloo Cemetery.
He was buried in August 2014 in Waterloo Cemetery, Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., IA, Findagrave #134804914.
