Queens For A Day
MIAMI-- "More old Queens are coming," says Kim Tomes Dutton in a sweet Texas drawl as she sits at a round table in a hotel ballroom with a handful of former Miss USAs like herself.
The "old queens" -- 15 out of a possible 34 (one is deceased) -- are here for the reunion of Miss USA beauty contest winners. It was a reunion for the good-looking if there ever was one. And while you might say, after a quick sweep of the room in which all 15 are assembled for a press conference, the past queens have lost their edge of perfection, time has been kind.
Miss USA, unlike some other pageants including Miss America, is an overt square-off of looks. There is no talent division, just swimsuit and evening gown competitions plus an interview with the panel of judges. There is no pretext here about a search for a great mind. Measurements matter in this contest run by Paramount Pictures.
Tomes Dutton (Miss USA 1977) is typical of most of yesteryear's winning women -- she's maturely attractive, she walks with a winner's bounce, she looks prosperous, she's married, she's a mommy and at 30 she's not a bit famous anymore.? ? But then she does belong to " the most exclusive sorority in the nation" as Miss USA Pageant officials like to remind.
The former Miss USAs have had their disappointments and failures just like plain Jane Doe. A queen for a year is not an open door for life. Its the real world, baby, even if you are a very beautiful baby.
"It's not like you're the queen of England," says Sharon Brown-Zell (Miss USA 1961). "After one year, you have to get back to real life where a whole lot of people greet you with, 'Who cares that you were Miss USA?" So you really have to be a very strong person to experience what all we have and still not lose sight of your personal goals."
Brown-Zell, 43, had a press agent after she won the Miss USA crown, but today she hardly needs one as she works as an interior designer in Chicago. She is the mother of two grown children and her second husband owns a real estate business.
"It was so bizarre while I was Miss USA," admits Tomes Dutton. "I traveled to so many neat places, but then it was over and I had to go back to school. I had a semester left at Texas A&M."
