Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Saint James Leader-Journal, July 2, 1920

Mrs. Dirlam Dies at Soldiers' Home

Mrs. M. J. Dirlam, who has been an inmate of the Soldiers' Home for several years, died early Tuesday morning surrounded by her closest relatives, at the age of 75 years, 4 months and 26 days.

Her maiden name was Matilda J. Bowen. She was born March 3rd, 1845, on a farm on Jake Prairie. She married John Davault in 1859, and during the CIvil War she suffered many trials and hardships from the fact that her people were Southern sympathizers, while her husband was a soldier in the Union Army.

Five children were born to them, three of them dying in infancy, and the only daughter dying at the age of 30, after having become the wife of W. J. Gorman. W. E. Davault is the only survivor of the family. His home is in a suburb of Chicago, and he was here in time to be with his mother in her last hours.

After the war Mr. and Mrs. Davault lived in Gasconade county, near Red Bird, until about 1873, then bought a farm on Lane's Prairie, where they lived about five years, when they moved to St. James, where the husband soon became identified with the political and industrial affairs of the town, and was recognized as an enthusiastic and active member of the lodge of Odd Fellows.

They later became inmates of the Federal Soldiers' Home at this place, August 16, 1903, Mr. Davault having served as private in Co. I, 124th Ill. Inf. He died January 16, 1916. Six years after their admittance into the home they celebrated their golden wedding, but in a cottage they were occupying at the time while on furlough.

In June, 1919, Mrs. Davault married Chas. S. Durlam, and after a short leave was readmitted with her husband.

The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon in the chapel of the Home, and was very inpressive and largely attended. A delegation on General Noble Circle of the ladies of the G. A. R. of which Mrs. Dirlam was a member went through the funeral rites of their order. These elderly ladies all appeared in snowy white and the ceremony was very pleasing.

A large number of autos were in waiting to convey the assembly to the burying ground which was the beautiful necropolis of the Masons. There the prodigality displayed in the wealth of beautiful floral tributes attested the esteem in which the departed was held by her many relatives and friends.
