CRYSTAL LAKE – Howard W. Van Peursem, 85, of Crystal Lake, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Centegra Hospital – McHenry.

He was born March 21, 1926, in Maurice, Iowa, to Chester and Gertrude (Boonstra) Van Peursem. On Aug. 8, 1948, he married Jo Griffits in Mitchellville, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He received his B.A. from Central College in Pella and M.A. from both University of Wisconsin-Madison and Northern Illinois University. He has been a resident of Crystal Lake since 1961. He was an educator who loved his students and had a great passion for his work. He served as principal at Cary-Grove High School for 18 years before retiring in 1988. He was also an avid Cubs fan.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jo; his children, Mark (Suzanne) Van Peursem and Susan Van Peursem; his brother, David (Minerva) Van Peursem; and his sister, Helen (the late Art) Kalsbeck.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. The visitation will continue from noon until the funeral at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at First Congregational Church, 461 Pierson St., Crystal Lake. Interment will be in Crystal Lake Memorial Park.

In lieu of flower, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 208 S. La Salle St., No. 1500, Chicago, IL 60604-1109; or to the American Cancer Society, 225 N. Michigan Ave., No. 1210, Chicago, IL 60601-7833.

Hill, daughter of Robert Marshall Hill, Sr., and Anna Jane Alexander, on 12 July 1904 in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA; This marriage was apparently very short-lived -- Anna was listed using her maiden name and her marital status was listed on the 1910 census as "D", and she was living with her parents, teaching school, with no children. John was previously married to Mary "Mollie" Sipe and had two sons with her as of the 1880 census, Wellsburg, Brooke County, WV. John remarried to Louise Morden onn 5 SEP 1910 and had four children with her. John Sylvester Orwick died on 28 June 1931 in Newton, Jasper Co., IA. He was buried in 1931 in Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, Polk Co., IA, Findagrave #49839139.
