Biography

Milton H. Turner was born about 1835 in Clinton or Highland Co., OH,

; son of George H. and Susannah T. (Hundley) Turner. Susannah's birth on 8 DEC 1817 is listed on Virgiinia, U.S., Extracted Vital Records, 1660-1923) (online, Ancestry.com). She died on 16 JUN 1835 and is buried at the Betterton Farm Cemetery in Clark Twp., Clinton County, Ohio, Findagrave.com memorial #81674475. She and George Turner were married 29 DEC 1833 in Clinton County, by John Hambrick, E.C. George H. Turner was listed on the 1840 federal census in Clark Twp., Clinton Co., OH, page 385, FHL Film #0020161. He was between 30 and 39 years of age, wife under 29 years, two sons under 5, and one son between 5 and 9 years old. That would be Milton H. Turner. George H. Turner, school teacher, age 41 born Virginia, was listed on the 1850 census of Fairfield Twp., Highland County, Ohio, with wife Hester and six children including son Josiah, age 12, and son William, age 10. Hester was Hester Ann McKibben (1819-1892), who George married on 4 jUL 1837. This George H. Turner was named George Hackworth Turner, born 27 MAR 1809, son of Meador and Piety (Hackworth) Turner according to the Geneanet Community Trees Index (online, Ancestry.com). Hester and the six children were listed on the 1860 census, Green Twp., Clinton County, Ohio, but George was not present. Hester (McKibben) Turner died on 9 APR 1892 in her home at Fithian, Vermilion Co., Illinois, according to her obituary published on page 9 of the 16 APR 1892 issue of The Champaign County News (Newspapers.com). It says her husband had preceded her in death by forty-one years, which would be about late 1850 or early 1851. No record of his death or burial found. Hester was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Watseka, Iroquois Co., Illinois, Findagrave memorial #153783943. DLB 2025.1

Milton remarried on 26 JAN 1865, in Richland Co., IL, to Martha "Mattie" Elizabeth Ruark, maiden name Roberts, widow of James Franklin Ruark (1831-1862). Mattie already had five children with her first husband, and had Della J. Turner (1865-1956) with Milton. Milton H. Turner died after 3 June 1880 in Illinois (probably.)

Occupation: Postmaster, Calhoun, IL (1866.) Milton H. Turner lived on 18 September 1850 in Clark Twp., Clinton Co., OH.1

Court of Common Pleas, Clinton County Ohio

John G. Ruse

vs. > Petition

M. H. Turner

The said Milton H. Turner, whose place of residence is to the said Plaintiff unknown, will take notice that the said John G. Ruse did, on the 27th day of January, 1860, file his petition in the Court of Common Pleas, within and for said county of Clinton and State of Ohio, against the said Milton H. Turner, setting forth, that on the 21st day of February, 1856, the said defendant entered into a written agreement, by which he agreed to, and did sell to the plaintiff a certain tract of land situate in said county of Clinton, described in said written contract, as the undivided eighth part of the farm on which the plaintiff then resided, which said defendant inherited from Susannah T. Turner, dce’d., for the sum of $275, upon the payment of which the defendant bound himself to make said plaintiff a deed to said land, plaintiff alleges that he has fully paid said purchase money, and asks that the said defendant may be adjudged to convey said premises to the said plaintiff. And the said Milton H. Turner is required to answer said petition on or before the third Saturday after the 9th day of March, 1860. JOHN G. RUSE,

by J. H. WEST & B. W. FULLER, his Atty’s

feb3-6w.

NOTE: The above matter may explain, in part, the apparent disappearance of Milton H. Turner from his first family and home region by the summer of 1860 when the federal census was taken. DLB 2025

Ancestry.com connects this individual to the Civil War service of a Milton Turner in the U.S. Army, Co. B, 138th Regt. Ohio Infantry, enlisted 2 MAY 1864 and discharged 1 SEP 1864, died 29 JUN 1899 in the Dayton National Home for veterans and buried in the Dayton National Cemetery. However, the Register of Members, National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938, (online at Ancestry.com), contains a record for the Milton Turner who died in the Dayton National Home. Among other inconsistent facts, it shows he was unmarried and age 52 when he died, i.e. born about 1846-7. This was clearly a different individual than the husband of Mary Roush and Maggie Roberts.

He lived on 3 June 1880 in Sumner, Lawrence Co., IL.2
