Delbert Gainor Cooper, known as "Jack" by family and friends passed from this life February 13, 2014 at the age of 91. He was born in Seymour, Texas on December 2, 1922 to Lonnie and Nora Cooper He enlisted in US Army in 1939. He was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma where he met and married the love of his life, Miss Jean Marie Patton on January 31, 1942. Jack began his career with Halliburton, in Beeville, Texas in 1946, in 1952 finally settled in Corpus Christi, Texas working for Baker Oil Tools, then Johnson Testers in McAllen, Texas. Jack felt the future was in natural gas, so after a climb up the ladder — he went to work for Texas Oil and Gas Corp. where he retired and went on his own developing Patton Oil Corp. in 1978. Jack worked long hours, traveled many miles with his jobs, but still never lost his tender, loving, and kind nature. His Christianity carried with him wherever he went even when working. Jack was a man of his word. He loved old westerns "Gunsmoke" and of course, the Dallas Cowboys. He was a great outdoorsman, an avid fisherman, and hunter. He spent many winters in Colorado hunting, skiing, and he loved to travel. Jack "Papaw" was a kind soul, nourishing, and generous by nature. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, brother-in-law, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved a little girl named Barbara who grew up to be his best friend – his sister-in-law.
Jack was preceded in death by his father and mother; his beloved wife of 62 years Jean; his son, Larry Jack Cooper, his son David Buttles; sisters, Iva Mae, Velma; and brother, William.
He is survived by his sister, Helen Espinosa of San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara Burt James and husband Jim of Lawton, Oklahoma; his son, Don Cooper (Diane) of Corpus Christi, Texas; daughter-in-law, Beth Cooper of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Don Cooper, Jr., (Joanna) of Cypress, Texas, Larry Jack Cooper of Houston, Texas, Tina Cooper-River of Corpus Christi, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Treavor Cooper of Houston, Texas, David Cooper of Cypress, Texas, and Austin Rivera of Corpus Christi, Texas; nieces and nephews, Troy and Raina Burt and their children, Samantha, Tayler, and Kamryn of Lawton, Oklahoma, Kathy and Alen Pellerin and their children, Jase and Reed of Lawton, Oklahoma, Helen Kay Stewart of San Saba, Texas, and Adrian Kraft of Houston, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Seaside Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel with Interment to follow at Seaside Memorial Park. Pallbearers: Jim James, Ivan Winningham, Don Cooper, Jr., Larry Jack Cooper, Treavor Cooper, Kenny Powell, Inez Martinez, James Rivera. Honorary Pallbearers: Austin Rivera, David Cooper. A heart-filled thank you goes out to Elida Villarreal and MaryAnn Winningham his caregivers since he broke his hip in 2012. They are the most wonderful two people one could ever hope for to care for a loved one. The family has a great love for them because of their love and care to "Papaw." We know they loved him too. D. G. "Jack" Cooper was a faithful member of the Weber Road Church of Christ where he attended for many years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, American Heart Assn., Weber Road Church of Christ, or the Sunny Glen Children's Home.
