Reverend Moses Starr relocated with his family in 1839 to Iowa. He owned land in the Northwest part of of Section 35, Lynn Grove Township, Jasper Co., Iowa, April 24, 1848, when this claim was made. Born in Hampshire County, Virginia (now WV) in 1787, but moved to Ohio when quite young. There he engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1839 they moved to Iowa. In 1853 the Starr family started the long and perilous journey across the plains. Ox and horse teams furnished the motive power. When they reached Dales, Oregon, Moses was taken ill and soon after reaching Clackamas he died. Saddened and bereaved though she was, Elizabeth took his place at the head of the little band and lead them to their destination in Benton County, Oregon. There she took up a Donation land claim of 160 acres. She improved her land and made a home. Her ability as a physician was of unusual order and many a sick room was brightened by her presence. She lived to the age of 79.
from Mabelle Martsching of Corvallis, OR:
“Moses Starr came on the wagon train in 1853, on the same train were Jonas Belknap, Rambos, H. B. Nichols, etc.
“Moses Starr died in Clackamas County, Oregon Territory in the mountains on way to Oregon. His wife Elizabeth Calhoun Starr received a Donation Land Claim in Benton County where she raised her family. She never remarried.
“On April 10, 1854 the first Methodist class was started by Noah Asbury Starr. He was also the first preacher in the area.
“Cornelius Battelle Starr was in the Civil War. He was mustered in Company A First Oregon Infantry at Salem for 9 months, then mustered out at Fort Yamhill.
“Music was always popular with these people. J. Benson Starr chose it for his career. He studied at the school of music at Willamette University, went on the six more years of study in New York, then opened a studio in Los Angeles. ---This was taken from the book, “They Laughed, Too” by Edna A. Mintonye.
“Elizabeth Harris was the mother of the first five children and Elizabeth Calhoun was the mother of the other seven children but she raised all of them.”.

Peter Quattelbaum was born in 1698 in Kettwig, Rheinland (Palatinate). He was living after 1728 in Palatinate Germany. He immigrated on 19 Oct 1736 to Philadelphia, PA. From the Colonial Records of PA: "At the Courthouse of Philadelphia, Oct. 19, 1736. Thirty-seven Foreigners, from the Palatinate, who, with their Families, making in all one hundred and ten persons, were imported here in the Brigantine John, of Perth Amboy, George Frazer, Master, from Rotterdam, but last from Dover, as by Clearance thence, were this day qualified as usual". Second on the list of allegiance and on the oath of abjuration is Peter Quattelbaum. He was living in June 1739 in Berks Co., PA. His name is on a petition for a road in Oley Township in Berks Co., then Montgomery Co., PA. He was living in 1742 in Lehigh Co., PA. He was living after 1746 in Philadelphia, PA. He died on 14 Jan 1748 in Philadelphia, PA. He was Reformed Church, the Calvinist church of the Palatinate. The family moved to VA and then SC after the death of Peter Quattelbaum. According to M. M. Quattlebaum, Peter was the only Quattelbaum to emigrate from Germany between 1700-1800 and all Quattlebaums in the U.S. come from his family and his 3 sons.
In his signature, he spelled his name "Petter". Peter and his children spelled their surname "Quattelbaum", however the third generation generally adopted "Quattlebaum" which has been used since. The name is derived from the old German word for a prune plum "quattel", and the German word for tree, "baum".
He was married to Ann Maria Barbara Von Der Hutte on 11 Apr 1723 in Kettwig, Rheinland, Prussen. Next to the "von der Hutte" name is written "Herkendall", indicating that the Hutte and Herkendall houses were the same family.
Ann Maria Barbara Von Der Hutte was born in 1702 in Palatinate, Germany. Peter Quattelbaum and Ann Maria Barbara Von Der Hutte had the following children:
i. Maria Gertraud Quattelbaum was born in 1728 in Palatinate, Germany.
ii. Maria Catharina Quattelbaum was born in 1730 in Palatinate Germany.
iii. Anna Margaretha Quattelbaum was born 19 September 1731 in Palatinate, Germany.
iv. Anna Barbara Quattelbaum was born in 1733 in Palatinate, Germany.
v. Johannes Quattelbaum was born in 1736 in Palatinate, Germany.
vi. Mathias Quattelbaum was born in 1738 in PA.
vii. Peter Quattelbaum was born about 1744.
viii. Johanna Quattelbaum was born in 1746. She died in 1748.
A Maria Quattelbaum, married woman, witnessed the marriage of Maria Catharina and Johann Umstadt and was likely Peter's mother and immigrated with his family.
