Jerrene Joyce Bennett, daughter of Dr. Paul M. and Juanita (Bartlett) Jillson, was born May 3, 1924 at Elgin, NE. She attended Elgin Public Schools, graduated from Elgin High School in 1942, and taught country school for a year, riding a horse to school. She then furthered her education at Midland College in Fremont and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Nursing in 1946 as a Registered Nurse.

On March 23, 1947, Jerrene was united in marriage with Kenneth D. Bennett at the Presbyterian Church in Elgin, NE. The couple lived in Pensacola, FL for five months until Kenneth was honorably discharged from the service. They returned to Nebraska and made there home in Elgin, NE. Jerrene worked as a registered nurse for 20 years in nursing homes in Neligh and Tilden.

Jerrene was an Admiral of the Nebraska Navy, a devoted volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Drives, an original and long-term member of the Elgin EMT's, and worked for more than 10 years as the head nurse at the "Girls' State" event. Jerrene was extremely involved in the republican party; both at the state and national levels. Jerrene enjoyed her work, her volunteerism, her family and playing Bridge.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Kenneth Bennett of Elgin, NE; two sons: Michael Bennett and his wife Peggy of Kennesaw, GA; William P. Bennett, Sr and wife JoAnne of Papillion, NE; six grandchildren: Michelle (Bryan) Howley; Christopher Bennett; Courtney S. (Schyler) Fricke; William "Paul" Bennett Jr. and fiancé Allison Leapley; Whitney A. Bennett; Matthew H. Bennett; one great-granddaughter: Brooklynn Howley; and one brother: Dr. Dale Jillson of Elgin, NE.

Jerrene was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Ted, Paul and Gene Jillson.



She was buried in May 2011 in West Cedar Valley Cemetery, Elgin, Antelope Co., NE, Find A Grave Memorial# 69631438.

Dr. Dale Brice Jillson, DVM, of Elgin, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, Nebraska. Dale, son of Dr. Paul M. and Juanita (Bartlett) Jillson, was born August 9, 1927 at Elgin, Nebraska.

Dale attended Elgin Public (NE.) High School, lettering in football and basketball, graduating with the class of 1945. He served his country in the Army Air Corps before attending college at University of Nebraska and graduating from Iowa State in 1953 with a degree in Veterinary Science.

Dale married Virginia Taylor on September 11, 1955 in Harlan, Iowa. After a few years living in Neligh, Nebraska, they moved in 1961 to his home community of Elgin. He served his community as a veterinarian for 43 years before retiring in 1997. He considered himself a lifelong resident of Elgin, Nebraska.

In the early years he served as a school board member and assisted with community celebrations. He also contributed as a volunteer fire fighter and chaired the Ice Cream Social for many years. A member of the United Methodist Church, he served on various committees throughout the years. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Diamond Lodge #291 A.M. and F.M. He was an avid sports enthusiast following Elgin and Nebraska sports. Dale was a devoted husband and father.

Dale is survived by: daughters, Kathryn Jillson and husband Steve Cook of Strongsville, Ohio, Kristine Boyer and husband Ray of Salina, Kansas, Elizabeth Jillson-Clark and husband Roger of Lincoln, Nebraska and Mary Jillson and husband James Heesacker of LaVista, Nebraska eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers-in-law: Kenneth D. Bennett of Elgin, Nebraska and Dwight (Darlene) Taylor of St. Charles, Missouri; sisters-in-law: Lucille Jillson of Lincoln, Nebraska and Shari Jillson of Des Moines, Iowa and a host relatives and friends.

Dale was preceded in death by: parents; wife, Virginia Jillson in 2004; brothers, Ted, Paul and Gene Jillson and sister, Jerrene Bennett.

Interment was in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery, Elgin, Nebraska with military rites by American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post #5816 of Elgin, Nebraska.

Funeral services are 11:00 am Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Elgin, NE, with Rev. Michael Davis officiating. Interment will follow at West Cedar Valley Cemetery in Elgin, NE with Military Rites by American Legion Post #229/VFW Post #5816. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Huffman-Levander Funeral Home in Elgin, NE with Masonic Rites service at 7:30 p.m. by Diamond Lodge #291 A.M. and F.M.

Kenneth Dale Bennett, son of William Harrison and Alma Johanna (Peterson) Bennett, was born July 27, 1923 at Elgin, NE. He lived in the Elgin-Neligh area most of his childhood, except for a short time spent in Oregon in the mid 1930’s. After his mother’s passing in 1935, the family moved to Elgin where he attended Elgin Public Schools, graduating in 1941. He enlisted in the US Navy in July of 1941 and served six years, 18 months on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger.

On March 23, 1947, Kenneth married Jerrene Joyce Jillson at the Presbyterian Church in Elgin, NE. The couple lived near Pensacola, FL for the last five months of Kenneth’s naval service, before returning to Elgin, NE where he worked as a welder at Bennett Implement for six years, after which he accepted a position as an agent for Mobil Oil Company in Elgin. He worked for Mobil for 30 years before it was purchased by Kumm Gas Co. in 1984, and continued working for them until retirement.

He continued living in Elgin until his health required him to move to the Samaritan Estates Assisted Living in Albion, NE, in December 2012, and later to The Waterford at Roxbury Park Assisted Living in Omaha, NE in March 2014.

Kenneth was active in the Elgin community, serving on city council, Elgin Volunteer Fire Dept. for 35 years, and West Cedar Valley Cemetery Board. He served time as Mayor of Elgin, Elgin Fire Chief, President of West Cedar Valley Cemetery Association, board member of Antelope Country Club, and master of the Masonic Lodgers in Elgin and Neligh. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner, current member of Diamond Lodge #291 A.M. and F.M., and a member of American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post #5816 of Elgin.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting, shooting trap and black powder, competing many times at the Cornhusker State Games and other competitions. He loved his family and enjoyed sharing his hobbies and interests with his children and grandchildren.

Kenneth is survived by two sons: William P. Bennett, Sr. and wife JoAnne of Papillion, NE; Michael Bennett and wife Peggy of Kennesaw, GA; six grandchildren: Courtney S. (Schyler) Fricke; William “Paul” Bennett Jr. (wife Allison); Whitney A. Bennett and fiancé Nathan Arnold; Matthew H. Bennett; Michelle (Bryan) Howley; Christopher Bennett; three great-grandchildren: Brooklynn N. Howley, Joshua K. Nicholas Schyler Fricke, and ; his sister: Charlotte Schumacher of Wabasha, MN; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 64 years, Jerrene in 2011.

Funeral services for George M. Pickett, Jr. 66, East Moline, are 12 Noon on Monday, May 16th, at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 2-6PM Sunday at funeral home. George died Monday May 9, 2011 surrounded by his family and friends. A memorial fund has been established.

George was born November 19, 1944 in Rock Island, the son of George and Sarah (Fjelland) Pickett Sr. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1962, and graduated from Black Hawk College where he received his Associates in Law Enforcement. He worked for the Rock Island Police Dept. until 1980, when he began doing insurance investigation and later started his own private investigation business. In the 1990's he went to work at for the Rock Island County Sheriff's Dept until he retired in 2010. He enjoyed fishing, camping and golf. George had played fast pitch softball for many years. He was an avid Notre Dame and a New York Yankee Fan.

Survivors include the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Roffman, East Moline, his children and their spouses: Jill and Lonnie Hostens, Moline, Jody and Mike Moneymaker, Moline, Jeff and Amanda Pickett, Rock, Island, Robert Pickett, Osco, IL and Ellen Pickett, Osco, grandchildren; Nick, Allisyn (James), Brianna, Hunter, and Trevor, great-grandchildren; Jenna and Lydia, a sister Virginia Bladel, Texas, and a brother Robert "Bob" (Linda) Pickett, Rock Island.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother John "Johnny" Pickett.

Mrs. Bessie Elvina Smith, 48, wife of O. R. Smith, died at her home in Fairfield, Friday noon, after an illness of several years.

She is survived by her husband, five daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Getter, of Dayton; Mrs. Emma Degenhart, of Fairfield; Mrs. Irene Singleton, of Hamilton; Lois and Betty at home; four sons, Ralph, of Osborn; Leonard, Robert and James, at home;' her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Semler, of Osborn; two sisters, Mrs. Harvey Miller of Osborn; Mrs. Wilbur Schildtknecht, of Crystal Lake, and six brothers, Clarence Semler, of Washington state; Edward, of North Dakota; Orian, Charles, Michael and Harry, of Osborn, and John, of Dayton, and by six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Morris Funeral Home, Osborn, and burial will be made in Fairfield Cemetery.

FAIRBORN -- Otto R. Smith, 73, of 410 W. Dayton dr., died Wednesday at Kiser lake. Born in Ida Grove, Iowa, he had been a resident 48 years. Mr. Smith was retired from Wright-Patterson Air Force base. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Getter, Mrs. Emma Degenhart, Mrs. Irene Singleton and Mrs. Lewis Casebolt, all of Fairborn, and Mrs. Betty South, Xenia; four sons, Ralph of Xenia, Leonard, Robert and James, all of Fairborn; three sisters, Mrs. Dolla Kalb, Iowa, Mrs. Ellice Estlick, North Dakota, and Mrs. Etta Meyers, California; two brothers, Elmer C. and Frank, both of North Dakota; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
